1/24th scale figures ?? Empty 1/24th scale figures ??

Post by Guest Sat 12 Apr 2014, 5:00 pm

I think this is the thread for an enquiry.....

With the NHRA Drag Racing Community build coming up,
I could do with a few 1/24th or 1/25th scale figures to give things a bit of movement.

1/35th scale is well catered for, but 1/25th isn't.
Apart from a couple of Italeri truckers, Tamiya pit crew and Fujumi Japanese students,
there is little out there.
What I really want is a couple of drivers in open face helmets
.....any ideas ???

Revell included a couple in kits years ago. One was Dick Landy and the other was Mickey Thompson. Both were in open faced helmets. Possible that a member has one or two in their stash. A year or so ago I was loking for the Mickey Thompson figure and found one from a member on here. Hope this helps. Also drag race figures of that era there was a Linda Vaughn figure made also. She was miss Hurst Shifter.

I remember Linda Vaughn, Buck - both of them.

I have these Paul, for your Good 'ole Boys pickup, and I have a Thompson somewhere too.
They need stripping, and fettling, but might do, and I can pop them in an envelope tomorrow, if you wish ?

Jack Hodgkins at Model Roundup has just replied to my enquiry, and has a few sets of Fujumi figures,
of which contain 8 figures, including three drivers - with alternate heads (one girl) but two have open face helmets,
however, at $25.90 plus postage plus duty, may be a bit on the pricey side ?

Ron

Wonderland models, up here in Edinburgh, i think this is the same set. its for preorder but should be in time for the end of the build.

They're one of the best model shops i've used.

*edit*
again for preorder but a smaller amount of figures, not bad for £6

Some Rednecks use semi-automatics and M16's now, apparently, according to TV Movies,
but I know what you mean !

Good link Colin - I've had that set years ago, and still have a couple of figures, but non of the drivers.

Looks like there is little else out there that would do, so I might have to buy the Fujumi set.
I've just started resin moulding, and copying the driver figures maybe a good idea for the future.

There was a set of Nascar drivers a few years ago, but the face shields were closed. They could be painted over for the 60's/70's build because there wasn't much advertising on the suits back then. I picked up a dozen of them years ago on closeout for $10 since the lesser names weren't popular.

They are all good links, and thanks for all the info.
If I get this resin casting perfected, drivers will be on my list of reproductions.

Looks like I can't add much. Sometimes figures came with Indy cars and maybe a sprint car (?). Best bet is still probably looking for a set of figures. I really don't understand the lack of scale people in the kits or as diorama figures. You could check some of the resin cast guys for figures too.

I just got back from a trip to N Georgia and back online.
I may have a couple of possible candidates. Let me look tomorrow and I'll get back.

Thanks Clay,
in the meantime I have put my order into Colin's suggestion in Scottieland,
and at £6 (ish) they will be cheap enough - if they come through in time, as they are currently out of stock,
and I've no idea why a girl in a bathing suit is needed ??
My thoughts are to resin mould the two male drivers for future use
....of course I can't sell them on because of copyright law - but I could give them away.

The dilemma of "NO FIGURES". Funny how it goes, most aircraft kits have pilots, 1/35 th scale WW11 model kits have an over abundance of figures to drive tanks and trucks and carts. There are some resin cast figures out there for cars but sadly done and frankly "cheezy", especially the bikini babes.

Lots of manufactures create historical figures in many scales but few zero in on 1/24, 1/25 or the millimeter equivalent of 75 mm that could cross over to automotive use. These makers cast their figures in white metal (lead) or the more popular medium, resin. They have the sculpting talent and expertise in marketing. The captive audience is out there. I think if well done figures were available they would be bought and painted and used. I think that a real renaissance could happen to automotive modelling if drivers and passengers and spectators were made available.
Why these makers have chosen to ignore automotive modellers floors me. Recently I had a conversation with a historical figure entrepreneur at the Renton IPMS show and presented these facts to him. Who knows, maybe he will look into the possibility and be the beginning.

Yes, it does take a new skill set to paint figures but if you can detail a car so it looks drivable, no problem.
You can learn and just like a well detailed / engineered car kit almost builds itself so the same with figures.

The 1/18 scale die-cast collectors have many figures available to apply to their scenarios, ie."American Graffiti" period. The sculpting is good, subject matter good, factory paint jobs not as good as the cars, IMO. When it comes to modelling I admit I am a figure modeller first, auto second. It was Alclad II that removed the "toy" look of the chrome on model cars and made it look like real chrome in scale. I have been hooked since.
If you are on the hunt for figures look at the Garden Scale railway hobby people, take a finished vehicle with you to compare as they are usually in a bubble pack. Garden Scale floats around 1/22 to 1/25 so be careful. Also check out 1/24 scale "Preiser" figures if you can find them. I have had my rant..............
Cheers Eh!
