Queensland road trip
Anne & I did a 3000 Km road trip to western Queensland. Here's some pics to enjoy/bore you with!
Qantas Founders Museum. B 707-138 & B 747-238. The 707 is a sister 'plane to John Travolta's 707. One off the few, perhaps only places where you can see two of Boeings finest on display- and tour inside.
A rail Ambulance. Well into the 1960's many outback 'highways' were unsealed and impassable after heavy rain. Hence the rail ambulance. This one has a transverse mid mounted flat head L4. I'm guessing British & about 850-1000 CC.
An early CMP truck, now advertising XXXX beer. Pronounced Fourex.
I don't know what car this is/was, I'm guessing British again. That aside, it ain't going to Leswalt. Let alone Fairymead.
What we call a "road train" They're about 60 yards long.
Fordson with a halftrack conversion. At a little town, Ilfracombe where they have a mile of old machinery on display along the highway.
An outback "pub". Tattersalls at Winton. Our trusty Holden out front. Had a couple of refreshing pots of beer there. A 'pot' is what we Queenslanders call a 10oz glass of beer. Why? No idea. South of the border they're a "middy"

Nice pics, brings back some memories. Was last in that area in the mid 80s on a XJ900 Yamaha.
The car body is the remains of a '36 Ford. The suicide rear doors and the small boot opening are a give away.
I have read about the rail ambulance, but I think this is the first pic I've seen.

Thanks for the photos. Good one of the road train. I saw many of them while in Australia in 2010, especially in Alice Springs. Too bad it is a Mack, and not a Western Star. I worked on many a Western Star prime mover with the folks at Western Star Australia in Brisbane! The plant that builds them is here in Portland, Oregon.

Wonderful material! Maybe we should start putting ROO BARS on all our contest entries? Nah!
Alice Springs reminds me of the TV miniseries, A Town Like Alice. Flooding can be a major hazard despite the dry climate. Thanks a tonne!
