Jaguar XJ220
Hola everyone! This one should be fairly brief and not overly interesting. Recently I've been getting stuck into some bigger projects and it felt like I was making no progress, so I decided it'd make a nice break to see myself build a model swiftly and cleanly. This won't be super detail, not even plug leads, just plain boring OOB, as I just want to have a sort of rehabilitation into building in reasonable length of time. I began working on the kit yesterday and the photos show how it stands as of this afternoon. Thanks for looking, more to come this evening.
Interior semi-done, needs another coat. It's not really as grey as it looks, it's actually a lovely tan colour. It'll get a semi gloss coat over the areas that are leather when the colour's finished.
The body parts cleaned and ready for colour at a later date.

Re: Jaguar XJ220
I assume this is the Tamiya kit Dan. Great start but watch out for the rear side windows. I had problems with mine a few years back.

The turbo Jag 220 looks like a Tamiya. I have a couple cheaper non turbo ones unbuilt, maybe they're Monograms. Looks like a perfect way to spend some time. Good luck, thanks for the pics!

Re: Jaguar XJ220
Thanks for the kind words folks and for the heads up on the windows Al, I've always dreaded putting the glass in on a build.
The kit is indeed Tamiya, as for other XJ220s, I know Heller make a kit, but aside from that, I don't really know.
Update on the body and interior: Over the past few days I've been working on the body mostly, whilst poking away at the interior on the side. This had it's highs and lows really. Lows first, I mucked up part of the front suspension/undercarriage when spraying, had to sand it, now I'm running dangerously low on semigloss black and I have no X-19 Smoke for the roof window section when it comes to it. The biggest issue was the decals though; I looked at them for the first time yesterday and they were very wrinkled. So, before starting I scanned them in using the printer, so as to have a digital backup. This was a wise move, as after applying the dash display, I knocked over the mug of warm water, onto the decals, the remaining ones shriveled up on contact. On the plus side though, the interior is almost done, as is the body. Pictures of the painting in progress below:
Also, I must apologize for the rather naff quality of the pictures and the way the colour photographs. I shall investigate and see if I can remedy the situation.
Step 1: Primer and wet sanding
Step 2: Base coat of metallic colour, Tamiya X-12 Gold Leaf
Step 3: Seal in the gold with a clear coat
Step 4: Begin applying coats of Tamiya X-27 Clear Red
Step 5: The end result after many layers. I will endeavor to get a better shot when time and light allow.
As you can see it still needs the final wet sanding and a top coat of clear, but progress is being made!!!!
Thanks for looking.

Re: Jaguar XJ220
Sorry to hear about the decals Dan but at least you have a contingency plan.
The interior looks great and the colour is gorgeous. Nice work.

Re: Jaguar XJ220
Aiiieee, that red is glowing!! Dashboard looks excellent. The only quibble, and it's optional in many models, is to use a very thin wash of a darker color to flow into crevices and highlight whatever detail there is on seats, doors, etc. I never understood why, when they make the dies for the seats, they don't put in a wrinkle or two to take the flat molded look away and make 'em look a bit used. Ah, well, when we have 3-D plastic printers we can do things our way!

Re: Jaguar XJ220
Thanks very much everyone.... and it was all going fairly reasonably.....
after having left the paint for a while, I came to apply the clear coat three days ago. That's when the problems started... All was well to begin with, one mist coat, a second mist coat, then on the first wet coat, this happened:
I would have updated sooner, but it's been a hectic week with work and with craning down at work, it makes sitting at the desk seem a bit less enticing.
What seems to have happened is that the clear has cut through to the clear between the gold and the red. What do you guys think I should do here? I was thinking I might respray the clear red over the top of the clear, then re-clear it lightly and polish for the rest of the shine.

Re: Jaguar XJ220
I'm not sure about the headlight cove but the rest looks like 'fisheye' to me. Usually caused by contamination.... typically grease.
Your fix MIGHT work but I think that way, you will still wind up with light coloured areas. If it was me, I'd strip it and start again.

Re: Jaguar XJ220
Before you strip it Dan,give it another coat of clear and see what happens?
You have nothing to lose by trying this,if it's still nasty then just strip it and start again...

I had feared that might be the response. But oh well.. some you win, some you lose. I shall try a touch up (who knows, it may even work) as I managed to save the last body I thought was lost. If nothing comes of that, I shall strip it and start afresh. Thanks for the response chaps

Re: Jaguar XJ220
We're so lucky these days with good info and paint stripping safely is one of the good possibilities for saving a kit we wouldn't finish in the past. Good luck!

Re: Jaguar XJ220
Thanks guys! My botched repair job yielded no results, so I decided to go ahead and attempt to strip it. The only trouble is, I forgot that the clear coat is a lacquer, so the oven cleaner did little to the lacquer coats. I've been told that Isopropyl Alcohol will do the trick, but I don't know if that's true. Can anyone help me here?
