Re: Tamiya VFR 750R
.....isn’t it just the lower part of the stripe on the nearside is a bit too high to line up with the rear panel ??
Or am I looking at it from the wrong angle ?
But looking good, these bikes aren’t easy to do.

Yes Ron, I agree it’s wrong, I should have put the parts on first and matched it up properly instead of trying to find a workaround. I’m sure I said I should do that method at the beginning of this thread
I’ll repaint it again tomorrow and match them up properly this time.

Re: Tamiya VFR 750R
Yesterday I spent a bit of time taping up and seeing if I could match up the lines across the panels.
After this I got brave, taped it up and gave it some red
I think that they look about in the right places now and the Honda decals should fit on the lower part hopefully. Both sides aren’t even either the dark blue blue is lower on one side than the other.
Next up is taping and painting the first blue line
Cheers

Re: Tamiya VFR 750R
Well it’s gone a bit wrong, placed the seat on and I’ve lost the back bit, literally searched everywhere and the only place left Is the bin.. don’t really wanna go in there . First time I’ve ever lost a part I think.
Checked my parts bin and everything else but no joy, so now I have to make one somehow.

Re: Tamiya VFR 750R
Is it just the rear butt pad on the seat fairing ? It’s got to be one of the easiest bits to make, but if there is a pillion seat, that’s different

Re: Tamiya VFR 750R
It’s that bit Ron, for the butt cheeks yeah.
I think I can do it, stuck 2 thin pieces of styrene together and got out the trusty vernier calliper, then looked at it for a while and put it to the side and decided it will be the last thing I attempt on this beast.
About to tape up for the dark blue, tamiya paints look off colour compared to the bike pics I’ve looked over for hours and hours. It was about £18 for the colour matched ones from zero paints, it’s hardly worth it when the red should be accurate to the decals and white is white, only needed the lighter blue at the most.
The most difficult part (if I manage to get there without destroying something) is the gold stripe which sits over the join lines between each colour, I planned on using the decals by cutting the lines out, but Ive realised that i need the paint joins in the exact place on the bike or they won’t fit … what a noob mistake, bummer

Re: Tamiya VFR 750R
Doing it on a real bike would be a trial in itself, but in 1/12th you could be bordering on insanity !
I wish you luck....sounds like you might need it.
If it turns out as well as the rest of it, then there is no need to worry.

Re: Tamiya VFR 750R
Thanks Ron!
I figured if I naff it up it’ll be in the cabinet and hopefully the clear will make it less noticeable..
Been thinking how I’ll do it and I may have a plan, my plans never work but they always makes sense in my head, I just never really consider that my goal isn’t going to be as I envisioned because it’s not possible by me

Re: Tamiya VFR 750R
It’s all painted up now, but no bleed onto either the white or the blue below.. really happy with that.
Gold stripes, I’ll be trying the kit decals but if it fails I’ll paint them on after the clear.
I have got tape marks on the paint even though I left the red for 2 days. I read that water removes the marks and I tried it but it seems these have crated little indentations into the paint. Maybe the clear will cover it but there’s no way I’m going through all the pain of taping it back up just to try and make it flat when the only people that will see it will be you guys, me and my lady. If it looks amazing I’ll put it on fb too
Cheers

You may just have to polish out those tape marks. I've never had that happen before. maybe the paint wasn't dry enough.

Re: Tamiya VFR 750R
I thought it maybe the paint not left long enough but don’t get this with zero, only Tamiya and it didn’t happen elsewhere, I’ve taped and taped this bike and only had it on the larger parts. I leave it long enough between coats too I do a couple of mist coats to try and seal the tape against the body then a couple of heavier coats to bring out the colour. Leave for a few days and go again. Maybe I should paint it over a couple of days.. I dunno

Re: Tamiya VFR 750R
So despite the tape marks I pushed on, fingers crossed the clear will save it but today I did this
I stole the gold lines from the decals!! Some where just a line so straight on and the others by cutting them as close as possible yet leaving a tiny bit of red for blending purposes and I maybe able to fix the curvature above the Honda badging because I think it’s a little out but by doing it the same way just leaving a bit more red I can possibly make it work.
They are now in the cabinet drying off
Cheers

Re: Tamiya VFR 750R
Decals are on, it would have been easier to cut them into sections and the next time i will do that, it’s more about getting the lines to fit back into place which scared me but now I wish I had. Anyway
Lines are slightly out but nothing I can do now. I should have cut just below the bend where it begins to drop down and then matched it up after, there would be a slight overlap but I think that would have looked better.

Re: Tamiya VFR 750R
I’ve painted and lettered several race and rally cars and a few bikes - admittedly, not big team stuff. It’s all preprinted wrap stuff now, but in the period of this bike the images were silk screen printed on clear sheets with the lining in tape. Colour was still sprayed on. Very often each side was different to the other, but the old adage comes into play : you never see both sides at once !
Looking good Ash, I admire your fastidiousness - and I don’t mean that in a bad way !

Cheers Mike, I think you’re right about the tape lines not being dry enough to work with, I’ll have to up it to about 4 maybe 5 days of no touching
