‘69 Camaro - or Isetta ?
Decisions, decisions ??
With the Anglia now finished, what do I build next ?
I once had a big stash of model kits, but I either sold the unbuilt kits or worked through building them - then they were sold !
Now, I have only two. One is the Foose 1/12th ‘69 Camaro, a Christmas gift from a few years ago that has been plundered for parts. It has been started, but I know the cooling fan, a ram pipe and a few other engine items have gone - as have the custom wheels....and the larger tyres were donated to my grandson’s RC car. The stock wheels are nice, but the stock tyres are anything but round.
I bought a set of nice RC wheels a while back, but they make it look too much like a donk, so I need to source a more appropriate set - for the wheels will dictate the final look.
The other kit is the Revell 1/16th. BMW Isetta. I’m not sure why I bought this, other than it was a large scale kit. Maybe it was a nostalgic thing ? When growing up as a nipper, both neighbours either side of me had 3-wheel micro-cars. One was a Heinkel bubble car, and the other, a bright yellow Meadows Frisky.
I’m undecided to which one to build first.

Do the BMW Isetta because it's an oddball car.

Build the Isetta and make it look like Guido from the movie CARS, complete with eyeballs.

Re: ‘69 Camaro - or Isetta ?
I’m genuinely undecided, but I rarely build cars stock, so how would I modify an Isetta ?
My only consideration would probably be to build it as a 3-wheeler, rather than four, as most of the cars imported into the UK were that version because of lower purchase and road tax - plus they could be driven by those with just a motorcycle licence, which is where the sales were aimed at.
My only association with a bubble car is an old trailer that I bought to tow my Ossa 250 trials bike around, which used the front axle, wheels/hubcaps, etc., from an Isetta.

Re: ‘69 Camaro - or Isetta ?
It’s finding a V8 in that scale.....and if there was a reasonably priced Ducati bike kit, I wouldn’t mind swapping the engines.
But, you know what, I’ll build both cars in tandem.
I’ll continue this thread in this Race Cars section for the Camaro, because I just have to make it a race car - and open another thread in the road cars for the Isetta.

Re: ‘69 Camaro - or Isetta ?
I'd love to see you build either one Ron...... but how about building the Isetta with nice wide 'bubble arches'?

So the Camaro engine is 1/12, the BMW is 1/16.
It's going to be massive. Go big or go home!!
Nearest thing I found on youtube was a four wheel version with a vw flat four.
Carry on, at least I gave it a good try. lol

Heh hee.... I think the first two are photoshopped ideas for the green one, and that’s how it ended up.....Veedub powered - because the wife had put her foot down on the spending !
For me it has to have a little bit more reality attached to it to keep me interested......and available scale parts.

Re: ‘69 Camaro - or Isetta ?
Well, it’s been decided - this thread is for the Camaro Z28.
But, finding any possible alternate wheels for the 1/12th Camaro is nigh on impossible - just like 1/8th. The biggest source is again RC model outlets, but the nearest size is 1/10, and they are mostly over-scale, as per the gold and chrome wheels that I have.
However Tamiya produce a couple that might do - the chromed wheels available on the VW Beetle/Bus kits, and Minilites from the retro Mini Cooper, which I have just purchased.

Re: ‘69 Camaro - or Isetta ?
The Race Camaro is moving forward, but I can’t guarantee it’ll be a Sunoco/Penske lookalike, as the decals would be a problem - but that car is my inspiration.
First rule of building a race car is normally to delete the rear seat - and that is now done, with new sheet metal and roll cage mounting points.
The engine/transmission is painted and ready for detailing - so things are moving along in the right direction.

I know I won't be able to keep up.
Beautiful work on the back seat and trunk area.

Re: ‘69 Camaro - or Isetta ?
I’m still plodding on with the build. .....The full cage should be finished today, and so should the engine.
Soon, I will need to choose the colour scheme.
Incidentally, yesterday I checked out a video on Roger Penske and Mark Donohue duo racing the Sunoco Camaros in the late sixties, and the loopholes and professional cheats they carried out to try and stop the dominance of Fords in Can-Am - such as acid dipping bodies to loose serious weight, swapping race numbers at the scrutineers, and faster fuelling techniques. It was an eye opener.

Re: ‘69 Camaro - or Isetta ?
The cage is finished along with new door panels, and it’s now in the first coats of primer - but the top paint will come from what I have in stock. Waste not, want not !
The decals could make or break this model - and I don’t have an Alps printer to print out white, so the final top coat will probably be of a light shade to give the decals a bit of edge - but it’s been years since I last made any decals. Since then my good printer died, and all I have is cheap home printer with very little colour range compared to the old one. Quality isn’t up to much either, but I’ll see what I can come up with.

Re: ‘69 Camaro - or Isetta ?
I managed to lay on the top coat yesterday, but I’ll leave it a while before flatting it off and giving it a coat of lacquer.
Photos when I have carried on a bit further in my colour scheme....if it works.

Re: ‘69 Camaro - or Isetta ?
Ron, that would good just in primer.
On the subject there's a lot of cars around now with what I'd call primer grey with a polished clearcoat. Nardo grey i think they have decided to call it. I can't see why anyone would buy a car that colour.

Well, the Camaro isn’t grey gloss, I can tell you that. Pics coming soon.
Volkswagen had a factory commercial colour that the sales reps used to refer to it as Gloss Primer - because that’s just what it looked like.
....strangely over the past few years Grey has become THE fashionable colour for just about everything ! 🥴

Re: ‘69 Camaro - or Isetta ?
I had a couple of spray cans of unused Tamiya Racing White - an off white, that I used on this car - however the final coats that came from the second tin look to be more creamy than the first. They were bought at the same time, and I shook them both vigorously prior to use, but it’s a result I didn’t expect from Tamiya.
Not to worry, it will be a good base to show off any decals that I make - but it still looks naked without a racing stripe or two, so that is my next challenge. I’d like Mopar bumblebee stripes around the tail, but that would be sacrilege on a Chevy. I have my ideas ; orange, and another one or two different colours ?
