my maternal grandfather was in WW1............was at one of the big battles, possibly Somme or Ypres.........by all accounts (i never met him, died when i was a toddler) he came back a changed man and never got over it...served in the Home Guard in WW2

Not surprising it would change someone Paul, must of been abject terror most of the time. Not to mention witnessing the outright barbarity of the effect of 'going over the top'.
God bless him, my great grandad and all who endured that carnage.
