R34 Skyline GTR
Drove a modified one today. I'm still laughing.
Fastest thing I ever drove was a 12 cylinder Ferrari Testarossa with 390 bhp, this was easily as fast.
My marbles are still a bit loose.

Yeah Shay, but is your butt still puckered.
Either one would be a blast to drive, and I am sure you had fun.
I hit 150 with my 1985 Dodge Omni GLH turbo. I think my 1989 Taurus SHO was faster, but never had enough room to really open it up. At 135 in fourth it was still pulling strong...but it did have that Yamaha V6 with a 5sp.

I think Shay and I know that American mph is faster than real mph - really it’s half of what it reads on the clock !

Re: R34 Skyline GTR
Well the Omni GLH christened by Carroll Shelby was a Talbot horizon with a 2.2 turbo engine good for 140 ish bhp, fast but no danger of 150 even going down a mountain.
Mind you, the British motoring press loved the SHO when it was current, which is unusual for an American car. 3 litre 24 valve V6 with 220 bhp, about the size of a Scorpio Granada Ron.
No facts checked by Google, just memory. I might even be wrong! lol

Re: R34 Skyline GTR
Shay, Shay, Shay...the HP on both cars was underrated because it was the 1980s and in America too much factory hp rating was a no no. Right before moving back to Oregon there was a 1986 GLH turbo for sale in the Denver area that had been track tested and had the print-out of being clocked at 150+....and not down a mountain.
I also was doing 145 if being completely honest.

Re: R34 Skyline GTR
On the point if speed :
I once worked with Durham Police, and as a bit of fun they calibrated the speedo on my Yamaha bike, and it was out by 13%. So the 130mph I thought I had screwed out of it the previous day was actually only 113 - still enough to ban me off the road for 12 months if I’d been caught.

I agree, there are many variables. Even the radar gun can be off a certain percentage and still meet its factory specs.

Re: R34 Skyline GTR
I told the chap that my MX-5 was better than his Skyline on the basis that I have 114 bhp and I can do 114 MPH.
He can't do 350 even down a mountain!

Re: R34 Skyline GTR
I had to do the math with my car. On our interstates we have speedometer check points every so often, in one mile increments over five miles. I set the cruise at 75 right before entering one, and at the end of the five miles it was dead on, right down to the tenth. At that time, many of the speedos only went to 85, stupid federal ratings. Later when I owned the SHO, I was surprised that it had a full speedometer and not one that ended at 85. Anyway, back to the GLH, I figured it was accurate at 85. There was a gap, then the fuel gage, then another gap, and then the speedometer started over again. It was setting on 25 when I ran out of road and had to shut it down. I was on a flat straight stretch of road that ran for four miles. I was going 85 when I hit the straight stretch. It was 2am, there were not any houses on that stretch of road, so I ran right down the middle of the road. Later when I had time to compare the space at the bottom of the speedometer to the same space through the middle of the speedo, it added up to 150. I knocked five off, figuring it was out by five. The tach was sitting on 4200 rpm. I didn't think anything more about it until my son showed me the picture of the printout on the 86 GLH, and it showed 155. I was young and dumb at the time, but I will say that it was a surreal feeling. The front air dam was working because the car kept getting lower, quieter, and smoother the faster I went.

Re: R34 Skyline GTR
.....and to think, there are great swathes of roads in the UK that are changing the maximum speed limits to 20mph from 30,
Found to be doing 155 on our roads and you would be hung, drawn and quartered. 🥴

Looking back on it, what would have happened if a deer stepped out in front of me...

Re: R34 Skyline GTR
At the time, the national posted speed for interstates was 55mph. Now it is up to the individual states. At the time these roads were built, the speed limit was 75mph. For our state, in the more populated area, it's 65 in-between cities. Going east into less populated areas it is 70mph. When you cross over into Idaho, the speed limit is 80mph, as is all of the western states from their on.

Re: R34 Skyline GTR
Yes, we all do things that give a buzz, but could so easily turn out nasty.
I only rode my FSR to ‘130’ just the once, because I thought : what if I had a blow out!
Incidentally, a year ago I got my very first speeding ticket 35 in a 30, just as I passed the sign. I had to go on a safety course to be told I’d been a naughty boy. I watch my speed all the time now. 🥴

Wow!
The police here don't even blink if you are five over. I have a couple friends who are officers, and rule of thumb is that they won't even look at you when your seven over out on the hiway.

Re: R34 Skyline GTR
Hardly go much over 90 these days.
What you want is a slowish car that you can wind out through the gears almost everywhere and have a laugh and not get busted.
Mk 1 MX-5. Get one now, they're finally getting more expensive.
Mk 2 RS 2000's are silly money now.

Re: R34 Skyline GTR
I thought I was due at least one speeding ticket, considering the many other infringements I have done over the past 50 years, so I took this one on the chin.
Although my speed camera fouling non-reflective number plates almost worked, they actual spell out my name, R.E.GILES, so there was no escaping it. 🥴
