Re: Christine the movie car
Andy, thanks bro.
Just crumpled up tin foil
Painted it red
Dragged it over fabric to remove paint
Then gave it a black wash
Peeled back areas here and there and inserted parts, anchored with CA glue
More black wash
Then some Tamiya weathering powders, black, rust, graphite
Next I sprayed some flat red randomly,
More black wash
More weathering etc
Then a final crush shaping.
And a final flat clear coat.

That's excellent! No perfection of bodywork or paint to worry about. I really like this idea.
I would never have been this creative.

Thanks David, it was fun to do.
I'm going to another one, but more of a brick shape.

This is one of those ideas that puts a three-day grin on my face. I really like that it has an organic, shredded meat kind of quality to it - gross as that sounds it's apropos for the subject matter. Excellent 'build!'

Great idea! The 'final' customization of an automobile.

Very cool buddy..! I like it. Been wanting to do a few more scrap yard vehicles for a diorama project for some time now. Not all great builds are shiny ones.

Re: Christine the movie car
To each and everyone of you, thanks for checking it out and for sharing the smiles. I have done another one that would be more to scale. I don't dig it as much, even thought I put WAY more time into it. I made copies of the trim, and of the all body panels but the trunk lid all out of two sheets of tin foil stuck together.
Here's a few pics.
I did research this time to see what a compressed car actually looked like. I had completely forgotten. You see my Grandfather owned a wrecking yard and once a year he did a massive recycle, I was lucky enough to see a few of those days. I can only imagine the cars he crushed. He owned it from the late 30's until the mid 80's. Sooooo many memories of getting to go through the 'new arrivals' looking for change and stuff in the trunk and under the seats.
Man those days were fun. Anyway I digress.
I totally forgot this is how most of the cars looked. It looks like there are two methods of crushing cars.
Now I want to do one in the pancake style. It will allow WAY more detail to be added.

Wow, that's a lot of scrap metal there. Though the pancake crush method allows for more detail it also seems like it will be way more work. Thinking about it I foresee that the 'uncrushed' body parts (plastic) being matched to the crushed parts (I'm going to assume crumpled metal foil) would be finicky. However, given the chaotic nature of such application you could easily disguise or hide the 'interface zones' with stuff from other vehicles or just plain old debris.
And the Imp of Weirdness demands that I suggest a wrecking ball set up, which is s different form of crush damage as well, lol.

Thanks for the insight Katz. I'm always interested innhear other take on an idea. I think I have most of your concern sorted out.
I also found this vid, which actually confirms my original work. skip to the half way point.

Do it! We'd all love to see that.
The funny thing about that scene is that little Ranchero would never be capable of carrying that load. The weight of the car is WAY more then it could ever handle, then add the weight of the gold. Someone on another site did the math, the gold alone is more then enough to cave the suspension.

Yep the little Racharo could never have hauled the Lincoln its only about 1/2 the Lincolns weight to start with..LOL.. but its just part of the movie..LOL.. I still have a couple of scale figures that were give-aways at the movie house from back in the days when my dad use to take us to the newer one every year when they came out..they called your ticket number and if it matched you got one set of 2 Roger Moore figures. Id like to build movie replicas of some of the vehicles they used in those shows but finding some of them is another story...74 Hornet...Little Nelly...etc.
I have often thought about trying to build the car crusher trailer and a track crane with grapple claw..etc. for a junkyard diorama possibly..??? But finding the parts and scratch building supplies is another issue due to the cost and availability here where Im at. Planing to build more junk yard vehicles in the future like my 64 Chevy pickup I did awhile back...I tend to use damaged or incomplete ones to make them from so they can have another chance to be something. I also thought about a rig with flat bed trailer with a load of junk vehicles on it from the 60s to 1970 era.

Re: Christine the movie car
I cant imagine Dave doing a junker but with his skills they would turn out nice with his attention to detail. I look at it this way...if there too far gone to resurrect one can always find another use for them in some way...kind of give them another chance to be something..? I have a badly damaged Johan Heavenly hearse I want to restore and a Johan badly damaged Cadillac ambulance that is too far gone to save so the ambulance might be a donor for a project I have in mind of a 68 Cadillac hearse but one would have to also find 2 68 Cadillacs for donors to try it. Funny enough we once owned a 68 Cadillac hearse years ago...maybe a replica build project idea..??? I kind of have a thing for family owned replica builds anyway...need to get more of them built.

Re: Christine the movie car
Back in the day I'd look at photos of some crazy-detailed dio's done by Railroad fanatics and drool over the detailing and weathering of the junkers and clunkers which always seemed to be a part of the more 'modern era' style set ups. This thread reminds me of the thought process which must have gone into some of them, where the level of skill and dedication to look and detail is carried over to the 'definitely not new' side of the scale model world. As I learned early in my own educational process, it can be more difficult to build a convincing 'wreck' than a showroom display version.

I know how you feel Dave. Make me sick too thinking about all the cars I've seen go into the crusher.
Mark, I'd like to see you build that.
Katz, there is deffinatly an art to weathering. Look at all the work TiKing does. Personally I find it very relaxing to weather a subject. The hard part is stopping and not ruining it and having to pretty much start over and then not making it look too muddled up.
Maybe we should do a group weathering build. Any subject any scale.
