Post by Speed Racer 65 Fri 09 Oct 2015, 1:17 pm

I have started another one even though I have several I could just finish...

This one will be pretty straight forward with just a few mods to the chassis, some parts box wheels and tires, Slixx decals, and make a roll bar.
I am also sourcing a Hemi instead of the kit supplied 440 Wedge.

I'm not sure what to do with the back seat where the widened rear wheel houses encroached into the interior. I have a big insert in the parts box from a Camaro kit that could be made into a road race car. The kits soulution was the big panel that covers the rear seat from the floor to the package tray. The interior on this car is mostly all black anyway so I may use that piece or some sheet stock and just cover the seat at an angle. I don't know yet.

The Challenger is my favourite Yankydoodle car and that one looks real mean.

Paneling is is the way to go on the rear seats Mitch. Not a difficult job with your skills!!

I was going to try to get this one done by next Saturday because I am going enter some of my builds in a model show here in Louisville.

But... I hate red plastic. Stupidest thing model makers ever did was mold in color...

I can't get the red to stop bleeding through. I put it in a tub of Super Clean this evening but I used Dupli Color so I may end up using brake fluid or oven cleaner in the end.

The orange and black will be fine on this kit but the white paint needs to be white not pale pink....

Try grey primer, followed by silver, followed by grey primer then you colour coat Mitch

Gold seems to work too, but be careful if you're clearcoating it. Last time I did it the clearcoat started the bleed through of red again...

I hate red plastic too.

I know Al and Shay, I used all the tricks, I primed it with gray and let that dry then I hit with a coat of white primer to lighten the color up before the white base and the red bled through. I hit it with a silver, let that dry and then white...  and it still turned pink, actually a light salmon....

After I take these layers of paint off I am hoping the Purple Power with pull some of the dye out too...

I know its not the right order, but I may paint the base black and paint the white over the black. Looking at the pictures of the real car I think it was a black car that they put white and orange stripes on.

I would rather have the white be a little on the grey side than pink...

I was going to go white car with the stripes painted on. The black may look better in the engine bay and on the underbody.

I did remove the molded in battery before painting.

1970 Challenger Dick Landy's Super Stock Empty Re: 1970 Challenger Dick Landy's Super Stock

Post by Speed Racer 65 Wed 14 Oct 2015, 3:22 pm

Last night I pulled the body out of the Super Clean and got the rest of the paint off pretty easily. It looks bad in the picture but its really clean and smooth. I put it back in the Super Clean to get the rest of the primer off.

I was so stoked that paint came off I worked on the interior tub a little. I didn't want to take the time to make the indentions in the corners for the widened wheel houses so I made the panel that replaced the back seat angled more than it really should be. I'm lazy, what can I say.

So yeah there would not be enough room to mount the seat in the area that is supposed to look like the seat was taken out but I can't find any pictures of the interior of Landy's car. Specifically the rear seat area. So artistic license has taken the place of subject and engineering accuracy. The interior is black on this car so it will be hard to see all that anyway. Right?

So, I used some sheet stock to make the panel where the bracing from the floor pan to the edge of the package tray would be. I wanted it to have some character so I added a silhouette of an X brace with some very thin sheet and then to make it look like it had a rolled stiffener bend I added some strip stock. I used a leather hole punch to make a few more details.

Thanks Shay, I have always wanted to try and simulate that panel...

I bought some Dupli Color sealer and tried again tonight. I followed the directions and while it's definitely better the red is still bleeding through and I am not going to chance working hard on this paint job and decals only to have it turn even more pink when I shoot the clear.

Revell still offers this kit so I applied to Revell spares for new a new body and hood from their latest kit which is molded in white. The form asks for the reason for the replacement request and I told them the body I have is molded in red and I have wasted $50 on paint and primer sealers and my white paint job keeps turning pink. Honesty is the best policy. If they truly care about their customers I should have white parts in a few weeks. They have been good about replacing parts that were missing on some kits in the past.

We'll see what happens. If they turn me down I will try to find it on a parts finder page on Face Book...

I wasn't going to get this one done by Saturday morning anyway and like I said, I am going to have a LOT of work in the paint job and I don't want it ruined by the red bleeding.

I've been talking to a few guys about this Mitch, try black over the the primer, more primer and then the colours, might be worth a try. I've never heard a proper answer to this problem on any site.

Well, I received a declined request email from Revell.  So if any of you guys have this kit in white and are planning on a dark color, I have a nicely preped body and hood I would gladly trade you mine for yours.

If I don't get any offers to trade I may do that Shay. Otherwise I may break down and buy another kit.

Here a picture of the kit that's molded in white.

I tried Shay's suggestion and shot it black then silver and then white. I think I can live with it. I am going to go ahead with the final black and orange top coats and see what it looks like.

I received the kit molded in white from Tim and I wasted no time getting it up to speed with the rest of the build.

So now with an engine from Ricky, headers and roll bar from Shay and a white body from Tim I am on my way to a nice build of Mr. Landy's super stock Dodge. I have ordered some decal paper to make a home made decal to give credit to my "crew" listed above.

The main colors are on and I have sanded the edges so the decals will lay down. I plan to shoot a coat of clear and paint the semi flat black this weekend and then start the decals.

I am not going to let the red molded body go to waste. I am going to do a Sam Posey T/A road race car out of it.
