Half & half build

I keep telling myself one day I'll build one this way.

A build where one half of the car is unsanded, unpainted & with only flashing that prevents proper parts fit removed.
The other half would get the usual Webby treatment. Paint, BMF, tyres scuffed, engine wired, & hosed.

My reason? Most of my friends have little idea of the labour that goes into my models. I thought a build like this would
illustrate the gulf between what I build and one "straight out of the box"

Anyone else have such mad visions?

Nice 'mad' idea Chis, and understandable
....as few people are aware of the hours of time and patience that goes into building our models.

Trying to make people approach our hobby as engineering in miniature,
and not just playing with model cars can only be a good thing.

The other way to do it Chris, would be to build two of the same kit. One done right and one left raw

I saw a couple on the "Clear, see through" Funny cars built with one half painted, decaled and finished and the other half still see through. It was pretty cool. I bought one to do that to and then got side tracked onto other subjects. Now maybe I will go back.

Hadn't thought of that! I think the contrast would me more striking if it was on one model though.

It was on one model Chris. One was a Cuda and the other a Charger. Older funny cars from the early 70's I would guess. I will take a picture of the kits and post them.

This is an interesting thread. Some time ago, I scratch built a replica of the 1:1 off road race car that I had. As the tube chassis was all brass, I made two chassis. That way, everyone could see the bare chassis, and even hold it. The bare chassis was clear coated after polishing with steel wool, to prevent tarnishing. Here is a photo:



The photo also shows the wood pattern I made for the hood, along with an un-trimmed vac formed part. This whole display does a pretty good job of showing a lot of what when into the build.

i like that idea of a half n half...........might have to steal that for future reference ;)

I saw pics of a 1930's Bugatti (I think) barn find, what they did was restore half of it perfectly and left the other half untouched, not the same thing at all, but it was amazing.

So the ones I saw built had one half of te body finished, painted and decaled and the other side was still clear so you could see the chassis through it.

OK, now I get it. Cool idea.
