1983 Volkswagen Golf GTI Campaign
Here's another archived build. The original kit is for the German 'Pirelli' LHD version but I'm having none of that so it gets a conversion to the UK spec 'Campaign' version. So I had to get a dash, change the wipers and add a factory sunroof.
I chucked all the bits in a heap then started sanding and filing.
I had to do the sunroof now so I made a template out of paper then used it to make a template out of styrene, tacked it into position then broke out the deadly sharp engraver, perfect grip never slipped even once. I used some bullet casings to get the curve on the edge.
Then I washed it up got it outside, gave it an undercoat of SG Black then a top coat of Titanium gold then Clear.
Next bit is my favourite, the engine, and for that I had to learn all about fuel injection and what goes where.

This looks like another good project. I notice those inside door panels have a lot of nice engraving detail to them.

Re: 1983 Volkswagen Golf GTI Campaign
Starting on the mechanicals. A nice easy distributor with only five holes to drill.
I wired up the plug leads first, installed the engine in the engine bay (It's really excellent that It's a seperate part) then test fitted all the other bits as there is a huge amount of wiring to do in such a small space.
The fuel distributor and filter were all set up and put in.
I wired the fuel lines through correctly, one to each cylinder, two to the cold start regulator and one to the warm start. I added the clutch line, throttle cable, vacuum advance, coil wire, washer bottle lines amongst many other things.
Moving to the underside after installing the engine.
Note the 'P' alloys. Nice touch.

Hi Dave,
Awesome work yet again Sir...
I really liked the original Golf; it was such an easy car to work on...
May I ask, how do you do your underbelly weathering, you always seem to get it spot on, I have tried a few times, but it always ends up caked...
Thank you sharing these builds...
Andy...

I know we call them a Rabbit, but I have owned a '77, '79, '80 and '85 cabriolet. Always loved this early body style. A friend had an '84 GTI, boy was I jealous.

Thank you. I use Humbrol weathering powder, rust, metal oxide, sand, black. You're meant to add water to make a paint but I just apply the powder straight on with a cotton bud and crush it on.

Hi Dave,
Thank you for the info, Sir, I use the Vallejo pigment powder and have always mixed it with water, maybe that's where I'm going wrong as it always seems to get to much, I'll have to give the dry technique a go...
Thank you again...

Do you seal it in when you are done? I have always used the dry method but find even years later dust can come off.

Re: 1983 Volkswagen Golf GTI Campaign
Good morning all. I used Tamiya polishing compounds on the clear coat then started dropping brown ink into shut lines and detail areas. Then I started on the black areas.
I prepared the headliner with it's mock sunroof. Then the body went on quite easily. All the glass went on from the outside after I painted the trims.
All other accesories put in place. The wipers were incredibly close fit to the bonnet. UK number plates on. Finished.

It looks great! Better paint finish than it comes out of the VW factory. Great detail work!

Nice Dave, I have a nearly finished(!) Cabriolet in a box somewhere upstairs.
It's a nice kit.

From the decal on the fan belt to the wear on the chassis. Your builds are breath taking!

Nice one Dave. Gorgeous paint as usual.
You going to post it into the finished threads?
