Me too.
I cannot possibly imagine what it must have been like or what those men were feeling at the time.
I do know this though... the whole world owes them an enormous debt and to those that died and were wounded in WWII.

Here in the U.S. the Public TV network did an hour show on the battle itself, in honor of those who fought there. Fighting aside, it shows the failed logic that brings about such tragedy and the emotional "they're not like us" thinking and greed for power really in control. Brave people doing their best in horrific conditions, may that and later wars be remembered as lessons.

Gary: In my career I have done a number of things that frightened me. I did them because I had too. I cannot begin to understand the bravery that it took for the young men to "go over the top" during WWI. To walk into overwhelming machine gun fire I'm afraid to say is something I do not know if I would have had the courage to do. Your great grandfather was an exceptionally brave man. It is entirely appropriate that you commemorate his memory in this manner.
