Monogram '31 Ford Model A
Got this on the bench
Sprues are plenty and full of little parts, multiple choices as it's a two-in-one kit
The only problem is that it's like an old mould of an Airfix kit ... by the time you've cleaned up all the flash/ejection pins etc there's nothing left of the detail
Onwards and upwards though... scratch building some bit's might be easier than cleaning them up, and it makes for more of a challenge and satisfaction at the end which is, for me, the appeal ... after all if we all just stuck part "a" to part "b" and made them the same colour it would be a boring hobby eh?

Re: Monogram '31 Ford Model A
I built it a good few years ago now Colin. Not a bad kit at all. Does this version have the cool inline four, with the Riley OHV head conversion?
Rat or rod?

Re: Monogram '31 Ford Model A
Ta for coming onboard chaps
Yes Al it's a nice inline 4 ... there's an "overhead" head for an option ... think i'm going to go with that but have the std manifold and pipe attached, maybe increase the diameter a bit to get them gasses out .. going with the twin carb option if it'll all fit together.
as far as the end result ... i'm thinking of a tidy paint job (maybe leaf green) at the mo ... although a white primered body with some rusty mudguards and some red oxide here and there is an option ... the cars got such a nice shape i dont want to take away from it.
which ever i chose i could always get another and do the other option ..... i know this bloke you see lol

I'll be watching to see how it goes, Colin. I've had this sitting on the bench for quite awhile, having had issues with the teeny little door hinges. Dropped a flathead in mine.

Re: Monogram '31 Ford Model A
Hmmm i've looked at those hinges Mike .... they look a little delicate for my liking and clumsiness ... might either do it doors shut or manufacture some better, more robust items.
going together slowly as a bit of cleaning up to do but overall it's going to plan.
Engine components
Bought Elaine a Ragdoll kitten .... should have known this would happen...
Dont know if anyone else uses this idea.... balsa frame for spraying on ... very soft wire inserted and is easily bent to any shape to steady the piece being worked on
Gave the mudguard assembly a nice satin black effect.
Chassis done in grey
Engine getting together and wired, dizzy wired up
Some tidying up of the chrome and paint to do, then i'll get it in the chassis when thats fully dry.

Re: Monogram '31 Ford Model A
The hinges on those doors are a nightmare. I think it's worth the effort to try and use them just for the learning experience. You never can tell you just might be the one to pull it off. I always make a run at them before gluing the doors shut. Maybe one day I will pull it off. I learn a little bit with each failure.

Hi Colin,
I'm with Mr Z on this, and I really think you could do it as your so used to using such small parts...

Re: Monogram '31 Ford Model A
Yep Andy i'll give it a go...
Got the motor in, and all wired and plumbed ... hopefully the wires and earth strap on the battery don't foul with the floor or body when i get that far.
the suspension assemblies are together and waiting to fully cure before they get a black spray.
Made little axle extensions .................
......... so i can fit these

The engine is looking good Colin.
Good luck with the battery wires, at the very least they will be a tight fit.
I'm going to reserve judgement on the wheels though for the moment!

Re: Monogram '31 Ford Model A
Nice simple stand, Colin. I've always used the common wire coat hanger stretched out. After it's painted the body can be hung upside down to prevent dust from falling on it. After that, it's tossed away to curb the world's population of wire coat hangers.

Re: Monogram '31 Ford Model A
After quite a bit of fettling and fiddling i got the wheels to sit where i wanted them to .. had to ream out the wheel inner and flatten off the shaft ends to do so.
The engine sits nicely and, after a dry fit, the bonnet (hood) doesn't foul
Made up a coil and a brake pot to give the bulk head a bit more detail to it, will add these when the body is sitting on the chassis along with some other random wiring to spruce it up
started on the doors, got the hinges in place and so far it seems "ok" ... they line up by eye with the body lugs ok but will need to attach them (when cured) to be certain theyre all in line physically

Re: Monogram '31 Ford Model A
Well the doors fit ok ....
the only thing is the hinges are just "drop on" so when the doors are open the doors will fall off if the models handled ... pretty pointless really ..... or am i missing something relevant ???
Also made up a little peddle rig for a bit of extra detail inside as the doors open.

Re: Monogram '31 Ford Model A
Nope. you are not missing anything. Just another reason why I glued mine closed, they kept falling off whenever I so much as looked at it. LOL
