'57 Corvette Empty '57 Corvette

Post by Shelby Sat 11 Apr 2015, 6:49 pm

I decided to get started on this kit which I bought at an antique show (aka. giant garage sale) and paid $5.00 for the Revell-Monogram kit from 1998.

'57 Corvette 20141111

The tooling of this kit dates back to 1977 so my expectations were fairly low when it came to mould lines, clean up and fit.

'57 Corvette Dsc00111

The kit was missing tail lights which Dave was generous enough to supply me with.  They are the only white parts you can see ready to be painted after stripping.  Thanks Dave!  '57 Corvette 1705482731

My plans are fairly simple, mostly box stock, wire the engine and add seat belts.  I do want to give it a different look than the usual red/white or pale blue.white combo most often seen on this model.

More progress to come!  Thanks for looking!

Denis: A really good buy. I have always preferred this old Corvette design compared to the more modern ones. My jury is still out on the color choice, but I'm sure it is going to look good when you get done. I'll be following closely.

I wonder if the interior will brighten it up, since it's topless?  Colors are different, almost frightening.

That color scheme would go well with blackwall tires and small hub caps - like they were delivered for racing in that period.

Thanks for the comments guys.  It definitely will be a different kind of Corvette once it's done.

I have been busy with a pool tournament and practicing lots to get prepared so modeling took a backseat but I have made progress all around the build just not at a picture stage, very soon though.

I'm looking for clarification on the Rochester Ramjet engine wiring.  The distributor below.

'57 Corvette Dsc00113

Am I correct to assume this is the way to get it wired up?  I haven't found a picture that shows me the wires coming out of the distributor so I figure they go from the back down and back around??

'57 Corvette Dsc00114

Thanks in advance for your help guys.  I will have pictures of progress soon.

Denis, that is a metal shroud that covers the wires. Since the body was made out of fiberglass there was no radio suppression from ignition noise like on a regular car. Your wiring will be perfect. If memory serves there was a cover that also went along the top of the wires above the exhaust manifold (a rather Rube Goldberg affair).

That is exactly how the spark plug wires went on those cars. Not sure how close to accurate you are building the model, but the engine would have been Chevrolet Engine Orange.

Thanks for confirming guys!

Buck - I gave myself a lot of latitude regarding colour accuracy and such.  I had two Chevy engines to paint and jus went along with the blue for both.

I'm not using the same wheels and tires as the kit so I had to modify the rotor and slim them down to fit.  Notice the plastic that was added for absolutely no extra fee.

'57 Corvette Dsc00115

The one piece chassis and pipes painted black and gloss aluminum.  The mufflers are two pieces to be glued top and bottom.

'57 Corvette Dsc00116

That pretty much concludes the exhaust system.

'57 Corvette Dsc00117

The interior with the molded in seats just to make any paint job and flocking more difficult than it has to be.  Simply painted semi gloss black.  Flocking and detailing to be done.

'57 Corvette Dsc00118

On the plus side it's not a tub so the door panels were seperate and much easier to work with.  Cranks details to be completed.

'57 Corvette Dsc00119

A start on the engine wiring and assembly.  I don't know if I will have room for the boot plugs but I will try to cram something in there.

'57 Corvette Dsc00120

That's all the progress for now.  Hopefully I will have more on this one soon.  Thanks for your help and checking it out guys!

Very nice. Because the body was fiber glass, they shielded the distributor with a metal cowling to stop the static impedance over the AM radio. '57 Corvette 3887228019

Thanks guys and I apologize for the late reply and dissapearance.  Although I haven't been posting for awhile I still have been a little active at the bench.

I worked some more on the engine and assembled it.
'57 Corvette Engine19
'57 Corvette Engine21

I tried to get the wires all the way to the dizzy but getting the wires to lay down nicely around the angle of the shroud proved to be sloppy so I found a different solution.
'57 Corvette Engine17
'57 Corvette Engine18

As a solution I added some insulation.
'57 Corvette Dizzy_11

Then painted it.  It will not really show up but I prefer to keep it finished and tidy.
'57 Corvette Dizzy_12

I have other stuff done and I will post more pictures later.  Thanks for checking it out!
