Drakkar Oseberg Viking Warship - Heller 1/180
Here's my first completed seagoing vessel in about 50 years. It is a fine little model by Heller built OOB except for the rigging. Not having photographs or museum pieces really gives you a lot of freedom in how you finish it. The purple paint on the sail seems to flouresce under artificial lighting.
In a different light.
Now it's on to the next little ship.
Thanks for looking.

Job well done indeed Mike. I like it a lot.
Is there a larger version of one of these?

Yes, Al. Revell of Germany has a 1/50th scale ship and Emhar has a 1/72 version that is less colorful. but they offer a set of Norse oarsmen to go with it. I think there may be a few others also.

Nice build, like the colorful shields. This is more realistic than the one I remember building. My ship a plastic kit, think it was made by Aurora back in the 60's. Had figures and a dragon figurehead. Anyone else have that one ?

Looks nice all finished. Hard to tell the weathering effects. I doubt there was any purple to dye a sail. It was very rare in natural dyes, hence why it was exclusively a "royal" color in Europe. I'll have to look for the film "the Vikings" with Kirk Douglas (?). Thanx for an unusual model.

Sorry about the purple. I chose something I had on hand that was deep and dark to contrast the yellow dragon decal. I probably should have used a dark blue.

Rons right about the purple, it was used for more higher standings, you could say your boat had a village elder/head on board.
Ironic thing is that the purple dye used in the majority of boat adornment of the era was obtained from a sea snail.
