Tamiya Celica GT4

Hi Guys

Here is my Celica GT4, Tamiya kit My model number 9 this one has a scratch built body kit, skirts, front and rear bumpers and KnN filter and I also tinted rear windows.

I know the window trim isn't very good but I dont know how to do it well and the home made bits aren't fantastic but it was the first time I ever tried scratch building, so here it is.

Any tips, tricks and comments will be welcomed.

Model No 9 and your homemade bit's look good to me Ash. Just keep at it and improve which each model and you will soon be looking back and seeing the improvements.

As for the the window trim, it looks fine to me.

For this one I used a rattle can, I normally use my airbrush but for some reason I cant make gloss go on like gloss, it always turns out Matt... I dont know why, could be pressure too high or not thinned enough, or just me..

Any ideas?

It could also be too cold out. Temperature will do the same thing. Optimal temp for painting is 70f, give or take a few degrees. The other thing that can cause your problem is spraying too far away from the model.

If your coats are going on wet and glossy, then drying Matt, I would lean toward the temperature issue. Hope this helps.

I always warm the rattle can in warm (not hot!) water. If its a sunny day the model goes in the sun to warm it. If cold & wet, I usually won't paint bodies.

I'll do interiors & warm up the plastic with an old hair drier.

I think we've had ideas on a low wattage light bulb build-it-yourself paint drying booth as well as conversions of low heat cylindrical dehydrators to paint drying booths. There may be ones on other forums and Y.T. too, if this memory of mine is correct.

That's only your 9th model ? Well my friend you are well on your way. My models did not look that good even on my 50th model LOL.

Very nice build you have there of a kit you don't see built up very often.

Ash, since I can't tell which parts you crafted and which parts came with the kit, I figure that you are way, way too hard on yourself. Looks great to me.

Back in my youth (a dark and distant memory to be sure) the only flat paints you could get were black and maybe white. You made other paints flat by adding extra thinner. Could be something along those lines. That said, if you use a gloss clear you can convert the flat base into a gloss. I pretty sure that all the Zero Paints that Al sprays come out matt, which he then turns gloss with clear.

The side skirts, rear bumper and the lower lip + side parts of the front bumper.
I tried glossing a couple of previous models but the clear i bought destroyed my paint and cracked it, making me paint them again.
The community build I will be using gloss but the one after that will be metallic so I will need to buy me some lacquer of some sort to add the shine.
Will be Tamiya Mica Blue and i see they make a gloss coat x22, perhaps I will try that..

Time will tell but thank you for your kinds words and advice.
