No doubt you've all lain awake at night wondering  " What happens with catastrophic turbine failure"

Wonder no more!

Ouite a few pics which is why I've only sent the link, not the pdf.  I've sent this to everyone I know with a technical background and I thought you lot might be interested.

Skid, I got the photos to load just fine.

Ouch!!! When I was going to the university, I spent a couple of summers working at a natural gas fueled, steam power plant in my home town. I worked one summer on a unit overhaul crew, so I got to see all of these components up close and personal. Got to spend a bunch of time sandblasting the HP and LP turbine blades. Also got to hand lap steam valve seats, these were about 16 to 18 inches in diameter. The work I did was on a complete unit, not a disaster like these photos.

Thanks for sharing. Brings back memories from a long time ago!

Disasters like that can be unbelievable. When I was in our Coke Plant, an exhauster lost oil pressure and blew. It's essentially a steam driven turbine providing suction to exhaust gases from the ovens and provide pressurized clean gas to fire the ovens. When it went, it took out the concrete flooring supporting it, threw off a 20 ton iron safety cover, and blew down into the basement taking out massive amounts of wiring, controls and instrumentation.

Suddenly understood why they told me to only go into the compressor room if absolutely necessary and make it quick.

Those pictures are amazing. When I was looking at the photos I thought it was steam driven. Now reading the other posts I can see it was. Man what a mess. Glad I don't have to clean it up.
