Polar Lights Discovery NX-1 1/144
I've always been interested in space and in the 60's and 70's I was obsessed with it. I saw 2001 at least 15 times in the theatre as it was the closest I was going to get to a "real space" experience at the time. I loved the functional design of the Discovery - it was so different from the Buck Rogers space plane ships of the 50's.
I picked up the Polar Lights kit from Wheels and Wings in Toronto in April, 2018 and started it (surprisingly) not long after. Its a good molding with fine detail and logical parts structure to hide seams. Impressive, although it was expensive. It takes a lot of shelf space though - long and slim like a ship model.
The pic shows it with a 1/144 Bandai X-Wing for scale. It's been at this stage for awhile, as I have to order the lighting kit, pod bay kit and pod, plus I want to build a HAL "eye" for the base.

I will have to try a car, just to be fair! Last car model was of a Datsun 240Z, probably in 1990, before kids and work took priority. The Z was my 4th car back in 1978 and I loved it!! Rebuilt the engine one summer and drove halfway across the country on a “test drive “ to visit a friend in the Navy.

My inner SF geek is totally chuffed by this. I remember trying to scratch build a Discovery as a kid (out of toilet paper rolls and papier mache) and failing miserably. When you say Pod Bay Kit is that an add-on for the kit itself or a separate diorama? Regardless, looking forward to seeing how this develops.

It’s a separate PE set from Paragrafix. You can do either the flight deck or the pod bay, as the original movie prop actually wasn’t big enough for both sets to fit!! Oops...
