Large scale heating or small steam generating system.

I think steam pressure with those wheel type shut offs in the background, maybe a ship.

Re: How things change.....
Noe are correct but Paul came closest with his " missile launch control".
They are apparently, early computers used by NASA to put astronauts into space!!!

I missed the guessing game part but the answer is startling. However, it reminds me of a Net meme about how we landed astronauts on the moon using computers less powerful than a Fit Bit health watch. Amazing what we have accomplished long before we had all the power that we take for granted today, lol.

Re: How things change.....
I don't think so, Al. I worked with industrial instrumentation and that's just an industrial control panel with a lot of instrumentation - no computers. The small black tags at the top of the light grey panels say "Boiler Number One" and "Boiler Number Two" if you enlarge them. Those are large boilers behind the panels.
The computing power to put astronauts in space then took up large rooms.

Maybe because the tag "mission control" has been associated with the picture it's now, as happens so much with the internet, become a fact.

It does say it mate.....
"Mission Control" is the guys position in the Flicky thing group ... just as it says "admin" under your name.
I've seen a couple of pictures from that (or similar) group that people could have assumed were early NASA type stuff because when you search for them they are tagged as mission control.
Confused ... you will be ... just tune it for next weeks thrilling episode of SOAP !!! (remember that?? lol )
and now i'm offline again until Jupiter lines up with some random passing asteroid and zaps the wayward satellite back into place again.

Just goes to show how easy it is to be taken in on the web.
Shame though, as I rather liked the idea of them as early NASA computers!!! LOL.

Re: How things change.....
There are early computer rooms fotos on the web. I had computer in about '69 where we worked with punch cards in a mid size room and the "computer" was a monster room of tubes and wires with fans to keep everything cool. And that was an older scientific computer, nothing as big as the then more modern ones. No dials anywhere there.

Re: How things change.....
Being one of those taken in I have to admit that it's 'obvious' once the explanations are aired, lol.
But one thing I do know is that when Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin were on their way to the lunar surface in the Eagle there was a computer glitch which basically ended with Neil Armstrong manually landing on the moon by eye, with low fuel, and they had overshot their planned touchdown point. The next time you hear the famous sound bite, "The Eagle has landed," consider how laconic he sounds given everything that had just happened before that.
And as for Soap, that show got me into a lot of trouble as an impressionable pre-teen, lol

Re: How things change.....
A few years ago my wife and I toured the Houston Control Center. While there we were lucky enough to meet Gene Cernan. He gave a talk on the Apollo missions with an emphasis on the Apollo 11 mission in a mockup of the Apollo control room. It was facinating. During the talk he pointed to the computer terminals in the room a let us know that our modern laptops have more memory than all the computers the Apollo program used to go to the moon. AMAZING!
