Sterling Pike's Peak Race Truck

WOOOOHOOOO!!! It is finally complete. After working on this monster, on and off, for almost 8 years, it is sort of bittersweet to have it done.

Since at times I will want to display it with the cab off (to show the detail underneath), I made a brass fixture for holding the cab. It was nickel plated after assembly.



So it is now boxed up and ready to take to the GSL Convention in Salt Lake City later this week. I fly there tomorrow afternoon. We will see how it does, but no matter how it turns out, this baby is finally complete. Since I worked on the real full sized race truck, it has truly been a labor of love.

Now I can move on to other model projects. Plus I have my full size car project, the restoration of a 1979 Meyers Manx dune buggy!!

Pete it is truly a work of art. man it is beautiful. Super detail. I know it will rock the GSL when it makes it's debut.

Well, GSL was extremely kind to me. The race truck took two awards:
- Competition, road - Best in Class
- The Gerald Wingrove Scratchbuilding Award

I was blown away and shocked at the second award. It is one of the Master Awards, and very special. I guess all the years were worth it.

Dont be shocked, that truck is truly amazing!

As a side note, I was sitting at the awards banquet with John J and his lovely wife. When the Gerald Wingrove award was announced, John said he looked over and thought I was going to have a heart attack! Yes, I have to say I was shocked.

You would have had to see up close, the stunning workmanship of the 100% scratch build Super 7 by Mark Jones that took best in show. I thought for sure that this model was winning this honor. I am still having a hard time realizing that this happened. Truly the highlight of my modeling hobby!

Pete congratulations on the master award. I wish I could have got there to see it in person.

Pete is not exaggerating. When they announced his name for the Master's Award I looked at him. His face was pale. His mouth was open and his right hand was reaching for his chest. I was sure he was having a heart attack. Fortunately I was wrong.

So I have one more post to this build.

My patient other half and I have made all the reservations to be in Florida in late Oct/early Nov for a Caribbean cruise out of Ft Lauderdale, with a few friends. Well this happens to end right before the big Southeast NNL model show in Smyrna, Ga ( just outside of Atlanta). So we are going to drive up to Atlanta, stopping at the Kennedy Space Center on the way, and attend the show.

I will take the race truck, as I was approached by the organizer of this show when at GSL. He invited me to the show, and said it would be great if I could bring the model. Little did he realize back then that it is actually going to happen. I am sure he will be quite surprised!!
