WWI on The History Channel

For those interested, the History Channel here in the US is premiering a series of episodes on WWI today. The first is about tank evolution. Great footage.

I don't know if this has been shown before elsewhere or not, they say it's new.

Due to the centenary of WWI, there has been a lot of programmes on Sky TV about it. Many of them say 'new' but I think they mean 'new to the channel' as it's obvious some of the people interviewed should be much older.

However, I still like watching them all and shall lookout for this one Mike. Thanks for the HU.

The whole title of the short series is "WWI - The First Modern War". The credits show it was created by Impossible Pictures of Ireland for the A&E Network in 2014. If there aren't more episodes, then it consists of 4 shows, covering new technology: tank evolution, submarines, use of poison gas, and the zeppelin blitz of Britain.

Great archive footage and readings from memoirs and diaries. Very interesting tidbits of history, also.

Saw the tank episode and wondered if all the first MkI tanks were named. Front on shots showed a name stencilled on the lower front metalwork. Names like HMLS Dauntless, HMLS Intrepid, HMLS Britannia, HMLS Intimidater on the first 26 units. Was that official or just a crew thing - very well painted.

Also, didn't know that George Patton was a military observer taking part in the 476 tank attack on Cambry in 1916, before America entered the war.

HMLS was an official designation.
