SOHC Front Engine dragster
....the venerable Hemi (and its off-shoots) were not the only engines used in top fuel dragsters back in the mid '60's ........ Connie Kalitta, Don Prudhomme, Tom Hoover, and a host of others chose the 427 cubic inch single overhead cam Ford as the basis for their powerplants (it didn't hurt that Ford was paying buckets of money to get racers to use their engine) ........... below is a ficticious 427 "Cammer" dragster ......... the chassis and body came from the Tommy Ivo kit ........... the engine came from a Model King Comet, the blower and drive from a Polar Lights funny car, and the injector from a Revell funny .......... the wiring and magneto came from Pro Tech .......... I used Cobracolors Sunset Daytona Orange Metallic paint and Polar lights decals

I remember those engines well. I was drag racing in Division 2 (Busters Rebels) and Sneaky Pete Robinson ran one in the division and national events at the time. I think he was from Atlanta. Nice job on the dragster.

Hi Old Coy,
This yet another stunning vehicle, I first thought it was a Candy Apple Red until I read your post, are the colours you use on these proper full sized vehicle paints or are they model paints...

These Cobracolors paints that I use (and unfortunately am running out of) are custom blended lacquers for model cars ........... they were created by a paint genius, Leon Tefft, from Chicago ............ he had basic colors, candies, pearls, and metallics ............... they were pre-mixed and were a joy to apply ........... I really miss Leon and his paintsJohnag wrote:Hi Old Coy,

You might contact Jameston Kroon at Scale Finishes. He is located in Salt Lake City, UT, and has a good website. He has lots of great colors, both in standard colors and specialty colors (such as accurate livery colors). I have always found what I wanted there. A lot of his paint is base/clear, where I have used the Testors Ultra Wet clear with good results.

Yes, Pete Robinson had quite a reputation as a "giant killer" until he got a big SOHC, and joined the big boys. Nice work and thanx for a full bodied slingshot!
