Ethanol in petrol
We're playing catch-up here, and have only got E10 for the last few weeks so no more E5 anywhere.
That's it no choice, it's 95 Octane, so no more 97.
Fears are that it's a bit too much for 30 plus year old cars. Don't talk to me about internet searches on this.....
Friends in America who have it for years say it's fine from experience.
Any thoughts lads?

Re: Ethanol in petrol
I’ve given up on classics now, for many reasons, fuel problems being part of that.
I used to rebuild aircooled VW’s, and it’s well known that the fuel degrades rubber hoses, so every year I renewed all the flexy fuel pipes
- those that didn’t often ended up with engine fires, and complete destruction of their cars.
Fortunately Aircooled Vw engines rarely fail mechanically due to modern fuels - but additives are available.

The Fiat 132 Mirafiori engine in the phoenix is supposed to run on in-leaded but wuth a lead additive runs fine on E5 but the MG TF is supposed to have E5. Fortunately we can still get it over here but it's not available et every filling station.
Ron: You mentioned additives were you refering to 'lead additive' or maybe an additive to add to E10 for E5 engines?

Sorry, Yes, Lead additives for petrol.
I drive ‘dirty’ diesels on a daily routine, so petrol configurations are double Dutch to me.,
but I do understand from other chaps that the new petrols do harm rubber seals and fittings.

Re: Ethanol in petrol
Well, I never believed in additives generally like injector cleaners or Slick 50 etc. on the basis that if they were any use, the Manufacturers would use or at least endorse them.
I went to my very good Motor Factors and they knew no more than I did, so I have apparantly wasted 20 quid on an Ethanol stabilizer for my 91 MX-5, at least on first hand experience from the American petrol heads that I know from other modelling sites who have up to E15 to deal with.
Al, anything post 2002/2003 is fine on E10 no worries.

Re: Ethanol in petrol
Finally a bit of sense for an Irish/British perspective. If I can run a 32 year old fuel injected car, I really can't see a problem. I can't speak for real classic stuff on multiple carbs to be fair though.
