Austin-Healey 100'6 mild custom

This is built from an original issue Revell kit. (around 1960, I think)

The kit shows all the signs of it's era. SIX piece poorly fitting body. Not a lot of flash but the usual amount of injection marks, sink holes etc.

The real deal has a chrome piece running the length of the tops or the front and rear wings. This was where the wings joined the body.

Revell tried to replicate this but it looked truly awful when put together. That's when I decided to do the mild custom job.



The chrome strips were sanded off, the bumper holes front and back were filled, the door handles were left off and the re-cesses and holes filled.

The windscreen was again awful, broken and not chromed, so that was left off and the holes again filled.

I exchanged the kit wire wheels and crappy two part tyres, for some wheels and tyres from a 1970 1/2 Baldwin Motion Camaro. The track had to be narrowed too, as Revell had the wheels hanging out the arches by about 3mm.

I made the fly screen from sheet styrene and the tonneau cover from nasal tissue.

The amount of work that went into the body was quite incredible! Lots of filling and sanding. (Repeat as many times as you wish. LOL)

Paint is Zero Paints Bentley metalic green. When finished, it looked way to dark. That's when I decided on yellow for the fly screen. Just needed a little colour lift methinks.

I wired the engine and had to fabricate a new oil filler tube, as that was missing from the kit along with the handbrake.

I'm moderaley pleased with the result.

Would I build another?..... not on your nelly. UNLESS, Revell or an after market supplier, made a factory hard top for it. Then it would be a great basis for conversion to a rally Healey 3000.

I stumbled upon your build and am curious as to which Revell kit it was: white plastic or green plastic?

I agree with you about Revell's misguided effort to "suggest" the chrome trim between the wings and the shrouds.

Your clean solution has been done with even a 1:1 Healey I have seen.

It's been a a few years since I built it but if I recall rightly, it was white.

Can I assume that those are S U carbs? I had one on my Harley back in the late 60's.

I happen to have 7-8 of these in a box. One at least, I believe, is the original issue. I need to dig them out and check now. lol

I have a similar early Revell Corvette that I gave up on.

Wasn't there originally a chrome trim that clipped over the wing/body joints,
running front to rear?
A friend has an MGA built in a similar fashion, with this trim,
- the wings were steel and the boot/bonnet surround panels were alloy,
and that's why there is always extensive corrosion to these parts.

Yes there was Ron but Revell's idea of it back then looked much more like a badly misaligned mold line. That's why I chose to remove them.

Those old multipiece bodies are a PITA. As you say, hours of fill 'n' sand. Repeat.

I ended up sticking a piece of thin strip over the join on my my '58 Cadiliac Brougham.
The 1:1 had a chrome mould there anyway

Very nice job on a rather horrendous kit ............ I never could co anything with those multi-piece bodies .............. too cool
