1972 GMC Step Side
I decided I needed to set some time aside for me. Been a little stressed lately so started to plug away on a kit that I started a long time ago.
This kit was extremely lacking detail wise. The chassis was one of those all built in type set ups with exhaust, drive shaft etc. all built in. Then you have the steel axle shafts, you get the picture. The body of this kit was beautiful and I just couldn't built it box stock. However I needed to get something built so didn't take it over the top.
No real scratch building on this one other than the exhaust which I used brass tubing then sprayed with stainless Alclad.
I kit bashed the chassis from the Dodge sidewinder show truck and added a Ross Gibson 502 Big Block. The frame needed to be stretched a bit and the box floor needed to be raised. I cut the bench seat from the one piece interior and added the buckets from the sidewinder kit. Under the hood had two of those big alignment dowels to line the chassis up to it. Those were cut out to clean up the engine compartment. I added a stainless steel mesh grill (painted black). Used two sets of Pegasus wheel sets to get the Big and Little look going. I added a cab floor to clean up the underneath a bit. Brass tube drive shaft, painted the step sides with Alclad Chrome. Now that I look at the pictures looks like I have to take the wax to the panel lines and clean them up a bit more... Paint was Tamiya Orange and did the panel lines in acrylic so they clean up easy.
Felt really good to get one completed, I've missed building a lot.
Excuse the wheels being all out of whack.... need to glue them on so they stay straight...

That is ONE CLEAN JOB! Luv the shade of orange and even though it's hard to see the interior, adding custom buckets shows how if something is done really well and neatly, it just looks normal! It's great to have a builder of your skill back at the bench and on the web. Thanx for a much enjoyed rare beauty, not many GMCs on these sites!
On a second look, even the wipers and the vent area in dark paint show great attention to doing it right!

As soon as I get the "WAYBACK" machine restored, we're all going back to the '60s and reclaim our younger selves. Until then...where'd I put that soldering iron??

Yep I,m feeling that truck man. The sound of the V8 grumbling away through the sidepipes . Oh how it make you all week at the knees.

Hi Brent,
WOW, I think this is the kind of pick up the Dukes should have had...
How did you manage to build the exhaust, it looks great...

Re: 1972 GMC Step Side
Thanks again everyone. Andy, I bought an odds and ends bag of Brass and Copper a long time ago from a local hobby shop. Forgot I had it but came across it while I was doing the build. I have a little tube bender that fit the pipe perfectly so that is how I did the bends. It's pretty tough stuff to bend. The mufflers are form the Sidewinder kit and I left small ends on the mufflers that slid into the brass. Wasn't a perfect fit but I just kept spinning the muffler into the tube and the tube cut its way in. A little paint, a little glue and that's what I got.
