Captain Kidd Pirate Ship - Lindberg 1/130
I got this kit as a birthday gift a few years ago. I didn't think too much about building a pirate ship, so it sat in the stash. Recently I opened it up looking for a new project. I was surprised it looked pretty good, nice detail and little flash. Then checking it online, I found out it was originally the Wappen von Hamburg from some years back, repackaged by Lindberg to satisfy a trend for pirate ships. They did the same with an old La Fleur French frigate and the Royal Sovereign, a British ship of the line. The idea of a 58 gun pirate ship should have given me a clue, I guess.
So, here goes. The Captain Kidd will be built as the Wappen von Hamburg. I'll find or copy some appropriate flags later.

I just heard recently on BBC radio that most pirate ships of the era, especially in the Caribbean, weren't large. They wanted small so they could duck into small coves of islands to hide.

Re: Captain Kidd Pirate Ship - Lindberg 1/130
Been doing a bit of hand painting here. I've noticed the sprues and instructions get a bit confusing here and there. The part numbers are poorly molded in and it seems there are numbers where there are no parts and multiple numbers near some parts. Also some numbers are wrong in the instructions.
Looking online I guess there are no records of color details of this ship. The only color agreed on is the emerald green on the upper sides. Then there are some bare wood (light and dark) as well as white below the waterline. Most have two shades of wood tones for the rest of the surfaces.
So here we go.
Still some painting and staining to do here.
Guns installed on one of the lower decks.
Stern mostly painted.
Bulkhead sections painted and ready to go.

Interesting build, some really good progress here.

Cool! The 're-branding' of ship kits is an old tradition (such as Revell's Cutty Sark and Thermopylae twins). Excellent start - the detailing on the paintwork is superb.

Re: Captain Kidd Pirate Ship - Lindberg 1/130
A big jump in progress here. It was a struggle getting the assembled decks cleanly into the two hull halves. A little warpage and mismatch of contours made it absolute hell, cannon coming loose along the way. The best effort left the front of the hull with a 1 mm gap at the top which was filled and repainted. Looking close, there's still a small gap on the inside between deck and gun wales. Don't look there.
Masts assembled and painted. Abbreviated instruction sheet not appreciated.
Lifeboat lashing not complete yet.
And a mast is finally in.
Model becoming top heavy as masts are installed. May have to permanently attach stand soon.
Thanks for looking,
Mike

More a warship, well done thus far. I can sympathize with warping and fit problems. Congrats on filling in where the kit "came up short."

Re: Captain Kidd Pirate Ship - Lindberg 1/130
Got the masts in and the ratlines attached. Since this is probably the third or fourth rerelease of this molding, something might have changed in the compound used for the ratline sprues. The instructions show bending the bottom tails of the piece to feed them into holes provided. The only problem is they are not very compliant and snap off when bent. They were probably a more vinyl material ages ago. So I snapped them all off and will replace afterwards.
Forging ahead here. Soon will have to come up with something special for the 100th anniversary of the end of WWI.

Great progress! The masts really make the ship a Ship. Looking forward to seeing the rigging.

Superb work Mike.
I'm guessing it's quite small. Any chance of a 'scale' shot please?

Al, it's actually quite large, compared to what I've done in the past.
They give you a rigging diagram, but it's one dimensional to the point you can't really be sure of the termination points of the lines.
So, I'm currently adding sails to make sure I don't put lines in that block them. I punched holes in the vacformed sails and laced them to the yardarms. Instead of the plastic rings provided for use as blocks, I found much smaller jewelry making beads in the craft store.
Thanks for your comments and for looking,
Mike

Re: Captain Kidd Pirate Ship - Lindberg 1/130
I agree, sometimes models came with the odd vinyl pieces. The sheer number of lines shown in the instructions may be a bit much for a scale model. Best of luck on the finish

Beautiful work on the start of the rigging. And best of luck working out the placement from that diagram, it is as bad as you mentioned. I'm sure you'll figure it out and the whole thing will look awesome.

Great job on the rigging Mike and as Harron says, all of it in the diagram I think will be too much

Re: Captain Kidd Pirate Ship - Lindberg 1/130
I'm just about complete with the rigging. The choice of glass beads didn't go as well as planned, though. The CA doesn't quite stick that well to them and every day when I returned to the table, another line or two would be hanging loosely. But the build goes on.
Added some loops of rope to the bulwarks where lines tied off.
I think I'll stick to the smaller scale sailing ships from here on. Easier to photograph, too.
Thanks for the comments and Happy Thanksgiving,
Mike

It's looking great Mike. I think you've hit the balance of rigging bang on the head!!!

Excellent progress! The rigging is so very cool, love the 'spiderweb/cats cradle' look of it.
