Styrene glue not taking...
It is the wallice and grommit A35 van,now someone sent me an Airfix tractor of the same vintage and that was the same.
This bit of sprue was glued together last night and it just fell apart using revelll cement - which is a good glue,so this morn I sanded the bits and reglued them - this is the result...
No go.

Re: Styrene glue not taking...
What exactly is MEK,will it melt/bond the plastic Al.The plastic is unusual and only the tractor and the A35 van are affected,no othe Airfix kit/plastic is affected.

Re: Styrene glue not taking...
MEK stands for Methyl Ethyl Keytone Nige.
It's not strictly a glue in the usual sense.
You hold the parts to be 'glued' together then dip a fine brush in the MEK and run it along the seam to be glued. Capillary action draws the MEK between the parts and partially melts the plastic, thereby causing a 'weld' or fusion of the two plastic parts, creating a stronger joint than mechanical glue joints.
You can buy it in quantity off ebay (I bought 5 litres which will see me through I suspect) under Meyhyl Ethyl Keytone or you can by much smaller quantities under brand names such as Plastic Weld.

Re: Styrene glue not taking...
It's so thin it evaporates before your eyes, it does work well on normal kit styrene though.

Re: Styrene glue not taking...
I've had issues with 'weird' plastic that was supposed to be styrene but didn't act that way. MEK is great for a lot of plastics but not all. When in doubt I resort to CA or epoxy - BUT there is also this stuff called GS Hypo Cement which is used in jewelry making. It's often used to hold watch crystal faces in bezels and it dries clear. But it is not liquid and is quite expensive.
Anyway, best of luck in working this one out ... and I will mention now that using a staple gun is not recommended, though it is oddly satisfying

I bought some of the GS Hypo form Micro-Mart a couple of years ago. It was $7-8 a tube. The problem is it gets a an air bubble in the tube and it keeps flowing out like Teastors tube cement. The tiny needle in the cap is also a pain to see and my blind azz can't see to get it back in the tube.

I use MEK almost exclusively. In the rare instance it will not work I, like Curt, use a two part epoxy. It has never failed me.
