French Galley La Reale Empty French Galley La Reale

Here is the second of the $2 ship buys during my LHS closing.  It's the French Galley La Reale.  It was the flagship of the French galley fleet in the 17th century under Louis XIV.  La Reale ('the Royal') referred to a class of galleys, larger than the normal galley.  Kingdoms of Venice, Cyprus, Corsica, Malta and even the Pope referred to their flagships as La Reale. Galleys were the predominant large ship from the BC era to the emergence of the frigate around 1700.

This looks like a nice kit.  It does have slight injection marks here and there.  There are also noticeable seam lines on delicate parts like the oars.  It comes with colored paper decorations for flags, banners and the tented areas.

Hopefully, this should be another quickie fun build.

Yipes, less than 6 inches long (?). Good luck. You'll be dreaming of oars before you finish!

Started work on the rowing deck first.  The oars had a noticeable seamline from a misalignment of the mold halves.  It would have been easier to fix that if I had only left the piece attached to the sprue, but my hands went to work before my brain.  LOL  So, I had to carefully scrape each oar side with a new #11 blade until they looked acceptable.

The seam is noticeable here after sanding.  What looked clean reappeared after priming.  I went over it again scraping with a new #11 blade.

I AB'd the oars with header white laquer and hand painted the rest.

The bottom of the hull is also header white.  Above the waterline will be blue.

Man those oars are looking outstanding. Painting the black tips to all those ropes must have tested your patience. Nice work.

The oars may have been a pain Mike but attention to detail, always pays of in the end.

Very nice work. I agree the painting must have been a test.

It's been a little while since the last update on this one.  I now realize I did quite a bit of small steps without taking pictures.  Befitting a flagship of such a flambouyant time in France, I decided to use some old leftover gold leaf for the gold areas of the ship.  It didn't go quite as I hoped, but it is what it is.  The sails were striped using a fine tipped marker and then fogged over with matt finish with a few drops of white diluted.

The gold still needs a little cleanup in the portholes. The rigging tilts the front mast some to try to upright the sail. The standard mounting pins make the sail's tail drag on deck.

Thanks for looking,

Mike my friend, you are being WAY to hard on yourself. That looks gorgeous. It really does. Nice one.

Finished it up today.  Boy, those French sure sported a lot of flags and banners.  Added EZLine for rigging.

I bet the men joining up in the navy then thought of glamorous days in foreign ports, not stuck rowing for days!  Great job, very beautiful.
