Re: Frenchies Bar
Here is the latest mock up of the exterior of Frenchie's.
I have reduced the size of the footprint of the diorama. I also have made the decision to reduce the front further by approximately 2 to 3 inches. I'm limited in size at GSL and will still probably have to request a waiver.
I intend for the foreground here to be a wetland and have a stand of cattails. The remainder of the rear of the building will be overgrown and have quite a bit of trash.
As I have said before, nothing is set in stone and I am open to suggestion and criticism.

The new roof looks great John and the scene looks nicely 'busy'.

Great, simply great! My only comment is to have the pump and picnic table not close together. How you'll get the "wetland" look will be magic.

Re: Frenchies Bar
I've made some progress on the Frenchie's scenery at the rear of the building.
The bottom of the swamp area was painted with several different colors (green, brown, gray, black) craft paints all blended together and allowed to dry over night. The area was then coated with a clear silicone that goes on white and then dries completely clear which does a pretty good job of representing water. Several different Woodland Scenics ground foams to represent different types of vegetation. Woodland Scenics cattails plants are being "planted" near the edges of the swamp. I still have another dozen or so to place. The swamp will also have ivy floating on the water ----- if the dealer finally sends my order.
I found the grass mat at Hobby Lobby. It is simply a matter of cutting it to size and peeling the backing off exposing the adhesive and placing the mat. The tree is a Woodland Scenic Birch that I found at a local Hobby Town. I would rather have used a willow or something similar, but was not able to find one big enough. I suppose I could have tried to scratch build the tree, but past efforts have been complete failures on my part.
I plan on placing the rest of the cattails and the ivy, but for the present I am moving on to mixing the ground goop for the front of Frenchie's. I will post more photos as appropriate. I'm still open to suggestions, criticism, comments and such.

I think it's looking great John and I like your idea for making the swamp area.
However, the I think the edges look a bit to manicured. I think they need to be much more 'taggy'.

Re: Frenchies Bar
Ditto what Al said. I do agree about the water line looking to uniform. No Water Lilies, Lilly Pads and frogs? It would be cool to have a black kettle hanging over a fire, Like they were boiling crawdads (crayfish) in it.

Re: Frenchies Bar
The swamp isn't finished yet guys. I misspoke when I referred to ivy. What I have on order is Lilly pads. Also I intend to place a couple of snags along the shore line as if they were blown there by a storm. Also, Frenchie does try to keep his place picked up so there will be a trash pile of sorts at the back of the building. I like the craw dad pot idea Buck. I'm going to see if I can find a suitable pot. If I do I'll place it on the side of the building near the barbecue.

Re: Frenchies Bar
For all practical purposes this is the final version of the diorama. There is still a fair amount of detail work to be done, but all the major items are finished. This will be the last WIP followup. Here is where we stand at the moment.
Frenchie's has settled down since the return of Mrs. Frenchie. Turns out she is now the sole owner of the bar and she will not tolerate misbehavior. When she and Frenchie had the big fight she decided to go to Detroit and consult a lawer about the several thousand dollars she loaned Frenchie just before their wedding. There was a written agreement requiring repayment and Frenchie has not made any payments. After several weeks the lawyer was successful in getting ownership of the bar transferred to Mrs. Frenchie. She can now be found inside the bar running the barbecue. Poor old Frenchie is now out.
This is the final entry in the WIP. My brother and his wife are coming up from Arizona tomorrow for a visit. Consequently not much will be getting done on the diorama for now. I have really enjoyed building this diorama, but to be honest I'm ready to move on to something new.
As always, comments, suggestions, criticism, praise and friendly ridicule are desired and welcome.

Re: Frenchies Bar
The swamp is looking terrific now John with the addition of the rocks and sheeting etc.
What have you got planned for the front ground surface?

Re: Frenchies Bar
Really excellent. Almost nothing to quibble over. So much work and skill involved. It's simply magnifico!
One observation: vehicles, if planning to use at this dio, I feel they should be either more dusty (Summer) or muddy, (winter).
