Ok this is what I'll be starting with:

Hopefully it will turn out something like this:

Via a scratched built chassis a bit like this:

In 2005 I saw this car at The Rod Run to the End of the World. It had a plaque on the dashboard that said it had raced at Bonneville in 194? and had reached a top speed of 87.??? MPH. Just don't remember the fine part of the details. I thought I had more than one picture of the car but I guess not. Anyway I thought that going that fast in that car had to be a thrill. Stock suspension front and rear, wishbones not even split. Also wondered about the brakes. it has juice brakes on it now but did it then? Or was it still the old mechanical brakes? No roll bar, no Helmet, No fire extinguisher. I wonder if they took the windshield off when they raced it. So anyway this is my inspiration.

So this is my starting point. I have these two kits, both are incomplete, and will use them. I know that inspiration is a 28 or 29 Model A and I don't have a kit and don't want to make one so I will use the body and the interior tub from the AMT 32 Phaeton. The Revell 30 Model A Sedan will give up the 4 cylinder engine with the speed equipment on it. I plan to run wire wheels not a late model steel wheel like on that car. Both kits have a set of wire wheels in them. Neither kit has tires in it so I will dig some out of the scrap yard. Not sure which frame I will use yet. I will use the Model A grille shell and radiator.

Not sure about the decal. I can't print white decals so will come up with something for that when the time comes. Maybe try printing then in a light silver or gray. We will see. So that's where I am at and that is "Plan A".

OK, so I head to the airport in an hour for the trip to Salt Lake. Before I go, an update. I have found and ordered a Super Beetle kit. Has the wrong windshield (curved ilo flat), but that can be remedied. Should be here before I get back on Sunday afternoon.

Ok Clay, what kit are the wheels from and what are you using to re-spoke them?

Here is what I will be working with. AMT 57 'bird, RG y-block, and some resin tires and wheels. I have had a picture in my head for years, now lets see if I can get it in 3D. lol

[quote="Sam"]Ok Clay, what kit are the wheels from and what are you using to re-spoke them?

Wish I could tell you , Sam, as I started on the rear halves I wondered if they even were the same set as the fronts. I have had them primered and in a baggie for quite a while. They don't seem to be jiving with one another, but I'm cobbling them together anyway.
On a previous build (Depot Hack) the rear halves had a stepped portion that allowed me to wire them.

On this set, there is only one narrow plane with the spokes molded together, so there is no place to allow new wire spokes to bypass each other. So that means, I will be using the back half of the wheels with the plastic spokes along with the front halves that have the new wire spokes.

I don't have any clue or remember, which model woody I used as a base for the depot hack. The cowl looks to be a 29. 😕

I did find a partial set of instructions that show a similar type of wheel assembly . These were from a Revell '30 Woody.

The wire on the salt wheels are .015 piano wire from Ace Hardware.

PostSubject: '34 So-Cal Coupe   Fri 03 May 2013, 3:10 am

This is an Altered States resin of the '34 Ford So-Cal Coupe. Maybe this will help me build it.

One donor kit will be the AMT '34 Ford.

Wish me luck
Anyone know where to get some cals for this car :?:

Here's my update of this morning.
In the first quarter of the 20th century, my fellow crackpots came up with some pretty interesting contraptions in the fields of avation and automobiles.
With that in mind, and Skids challenge earlier in the thread, I feel justified in resorting to my beloved genre, Imagineering, as I switch gears in my build.
Here is my first mod... an adapter plate for the back of the 'bellhousing'

Phantastic ideas! All have great potential. The "SoCal" ('34?) Ford streamlining was decades ahead of its time and the belly tankers are so cool! This will be great fun to see develop. Thanks to all.

Ol' duma$$ had another senior moment again !! :drunken: Maybe I SHOULD start drinking !!
I had extended the frame, coupled the engines, and fabbed engine mounts. When I went to mock up the front axle, I discovered that I'd reattached the front of the frame upside down !!

Spent this morning doing it all over !

Too bad we did not have this Community Build subject last time. I am at the GSL in Salt Lake, and in the "Land Speed Record" category, there is only ONE model entered.

It is now only a half hour before they close the hall and start the judging, and it is still only the single entrant. John and I could have added to this model class!!!
