Challenger 1 1960
I started by doing as much research on the Challenger 1 as I could. I found at the time it was on display at the Wally Parks NHRA Museum.
I found a ton of reference material out there on the car. So using this kit I got started.
The first thing I did was get rid of the chrome. There is no chrome on this race car. So all these parts went into the bleach bath.
While the parts were soaking I cleaned the body panels up and put them in primer.
Made a trip down to Walmart and found some Kryl;on paint the was close to the Beige used on the wheels and got them done.
I figured that the building of 4 engines would be like assembly line work. So I built the long blocks and painted them with Pontiac Blue, also by Dulpi-color.
What I hope to do is use enough different metizlier paints to make this thing look close to real.
Be back soon with another update. All comments and questions are more than welcome. Thanks for looking in.

Re: Challenger 1 1960
Thanks for following along. Your comments make it more fun.
With the paint on the long blocks drying I decided to start on the chassis. I mocked it up to make sure everything would fit right.
Man this thing is huge. I can't believe how long it is.
While the glue is setting up on the chassis I started painting parts with whatever Metalizer color I thought was accurate. It's hard to tell from the photos so a lot of it is just by feel. Trying to use the same materials they would have used in 1958.
Fuel tanks and engine plates. Both appear to be made of Aluminum.
The car doesn't have radiators in it. Instead they have 4 tanks of water that get rid of the heat. Each is mounted by a wheel so the speed of the car and the wind kicked up by the wheel turning gets rid of the heat.
The parachutes are packed into an aluminum tube at the back of the car. So I got it ready while I had the paint going.
And last but not least the Fire extinguisher.
That's about it for now. next time we will start to do some engine work. See if we can get them puppies ready to rumble.
Thanks for looking in. All comments and inputs are welcome.

Thanks for looking in. Good to have you here.
I took all the engine parts and painted therm with different Testor's metalizers. Magnesium, Stainless Steel, Aluminum Plate, and some others. That got me to the point I was ready to start the assembly line running.
Started with a couple mock ups.
This let me see if the colors were what I was after. So time to break out the glue.In these pictures you can see the fuel lines are added to the injectors, also lines from the fuel pumps are in place. And spark plug wires.
I named the engines A,B,C,and D to help me remember where they went. The lettering will be covered by the bell housings.
So with the engine work out of the way it's time to move on to other things. I'll be back in a couple days to update this build. Thanks for looking in. All comments and inputs are welcome.

Thanks for looking in everyone.
With all the engine work done for now. I moved on to other things. I put the many body panels in color. the color is Dulpi-color # 88-00964 Harvard Blue Pearl.
Then while the paint was setting up I went back to the power train. this is the transmissions and bell housings onto the engine plates.
Then it was time to see if everything still fit. here is the final mock up of the differentials, transmissions and engine plates into the chassis.
same thing but from the side.

Re: Challenger 1 1960
Since the last post I have quite a bit done. After doing a final mock up on the chassis I did one on the power trains. 4 engines, 4 transmissions, 4 clutches, 4 differentials. That is a lot to line up. so here is what all that mess looks like.
Some with no more excuses to be had, time to put the power trains into the chassis.
Differentials and fuel tanks.
Now the time has come to see if the body panels still fit. They all fit before I added the wiring and plumbing so keep your fingers crossed.
Sitting in the drivers seat and looking down that long hood. This is what you would see.
Well that's about it for this update. Thanks for looking in. All comments and questions are welcome. See ya later.

Re: Challenger 1 1960
Hello, everyone. Thanks for stopping by. Time to update this build again.
In the last update we had the power trains into the chassis, the body in color and were fitting everything to see how far off we are. It is amazing how well stuff fits until you are ready for the final assembly then , well you've all been there. So now we are going to do the final wiring on the fuel system. And chassis stuff.
This photo shows the shift linage, steering, fuel lines and fuel shut off valves. In front of the engines.
Here are the shift and clutch linkage from the rear of the car. Behind the engines.
Across the fuel tanks looking at front frame brace. Also steering pivot.
Wheels and tires, steering knuckle, ready to go on. Those finned things are the brake drums. No Disc brakes for this puppy. Good old expansion shoe and drum brakes. No wonder they had 10 miles or more to stop.
Heat transfer tanks. No radiators. These were installed by the wheels and tires. The wind the they stirred up is what cooled the water.
Steering linkage, floor boards, steering wheel all ready.
The loud pedal.
Fire bottles.
Everything but wheels and tires. All the above stuff has been added to the chassis plus the chute housing.
OK until next time that's it for now. Thanks for looking in and remember all comments and questions are welcome.

Re: Challenger 1 1960
Thanks for looking in. I guess it is time to put this on the shelf.
Here are the body panels all decaled up. There is no clear on this model. Just paint, decal and wax.
Really that about wraps up the build. I didn't want to just display the car on the shelf. It didn't look right. So I decided to build a display. Here is the real car on display.
I wanted to do something like this display. So I came up with this idea. A couple pieces of 1x8 pine. Glued and nailed them together. The picture was taken the day that Mickey Thompson went 406.60. It is him the car and the crew. Using it as a mural and then some cheap fabric I found at Wal Mart I made a "curtain" to surround the picture.
The uprights for the barrier I made from craft wood I found at Michaels. The barrier is a piece of gold chain. I don't remember where I bought it. It's not real gold just looks it. I think it was a 23" necklace.
The stand is more craft wood and the sign was made on Print Master.
When all that stuff was put together it looked like this.
And that's it for this one. You can go to the NMA to see more. This is an older build that I wanted archived here. I can tell you that since this one was finished I have entered it into 4 Model Contests and won 1 st place in it's class every time.
I want to thank everyone that followed along. I hope you enjoyed the build as much as I did. Just to let you know Iam finished here yet. I will build this car again. But it will be built as it was first built in 1958. The engines were only injected, no blowers, and the middle of the car was flat. you can go here to check it out.

Re: Challenger 1 1960
Hey Bruce. No this is the 1960 version of the car. The other one I am working on is the 1959 version of the car. The car was built in 1958, first raced in 1959 and then went 406.60 MHP in 1960. The thread for the 1959 version is on here. I will be back on that build in a bit. Not long.
