How Too -Rustmarks
I'm posting this by kind permission of Lutzbikes, a member on another froum:
Hi All;
here a technique a friend showed me, to get realistic Rustmarks with acrylic Color.
At first you paint the area to get rusted with different shades of rust Color. I prefer sparkling the color to get an realistic touch.
after this work is done i put water on it and put Salt over it and let it dry.
The Salt will be used as a Stencil.
After drying time I shot some coats of grey ground color over the surface.
After the ground coat is dry i shot the body color over it and let it dry.
And now the secret moment ...
you hold the part under warm water and the salt dissolves.
At last i used the Airgun and chalks to weather some areas.
Hope, this is helpful for someone.
Regards Lutz

Very, very cool work!!!! The final airgun and chalk work take away from the starkness and give absolute reality to it! For reference, going by the crystal size, the drum looks bigger than 1/25th, like maybe 1/16? 1/12? Anyway, it is a fine tutorial and great, clear photos!

Great technique. Combined with realistic and logical placement, Mother Nature can't do much better.

Very cool! Similar to the rust/salt technique for an oil drum that's on Y.T. Great fotos and the little pastel chalk powder brushed on in spots softens the look and it does indeed look 1:1 instead of in scale.
