1965/66 AMT Mustang Fastback Restoration
Decided to jump into this one ... and add another WIP to my bench.
I picked up this original issue 65/66 AMT Fastback in an Ebay lot about a year ago. This is a tough kit to find as it was modified in the late 60's to create their altered drag car.
In another Ebay buy, I tracked down an original set of instructions.
The final component I needed for the rebuild was picked up last month at the San Antonio IPMS show where I grabbed a coupe version to get the missing bits to do a proper rebuild.
My plan is to do a complete "box stock" using as much of the 54 year old plastic as possible.

Re: 1965/66 AMT Mustang Fastback Restoration
Clean up continues on the Mustang
Multiple sprays of oven cleaner followed by 800 grit brought it to this point. Some Tamiya putty has been applied to repair some glue damage on the body.
Fortunately, there was no paint on the chassis ... only a lot of glue damage. I decided to cut out the A-Arms and transplant those from the 66 Coupe. A lot of sanding to smooth it out as much as possible before I shoot it with primer.

Re: 1965/66 AMT Mustang Fastback Restoration
Focus is on the interior now. Tried something new ... decided to remove the door panels to aid in painting and foiling. Basic paint laid down. After looking at 65 Mustangs on the web decided to go with a three tone. I think the carpet is a bit dark (what I had on the shelf), but its workable. STill more work to be done ...

Excellent work! And the carpet looks fine with that shade/darkness.

I will be following along Chris. I have an ugly back half and roof I plan on grafting to the same 66 donor kit you are using.

Re: 1965/66 AMT Mustang Fastback Restoration
As another model/promo restorer this is going to be cool to see done. I have the 65/66 promos of those one a fastback and the other a trunk car or notchback version to restore once I have what is needed. I cant just let any very late 50s through mid 70s body style ones die...I have to try to save them...LOL... Its like there calling me to help them... LOL...

Re: 1965/66 AMT Mustang Fastback Restoration
Moving forward on the 65 AMT.
I saw a technique in an old issue of SAE where BMF was added before the paint and then after paint, the paint scraped off the emblem. I tried it on this build and was pleasantly surprised with the results. The only thing I would've done different is to not apply the clear (it caused the emblems to become smothered and more challenging to remove.
On the topic of paint ... it was a real pain on this build as I did not properly prep the plastic after stripping the original blue. As a result, I had a good bit of crazing I struggled with. Had a few sanding and reshoots.

Excellent result with the BMF trick! The body colour is gorgeous, looking forward to seeing this come together.

Nice one Chris. I knew about the BFM/paint trick but never tried it. Looks like you cracked it nicely. Well done.

Re: 1965/66 AMT Mustang Fastback Restoration
Calling this one done. A pretty straight forward rebuild with attempting two new techniques (for me). Pre foiling before paint and removing the interior door panels for easier painting/foiling. Both worked out OK.
Struggled with the paint on this one because of contaminates on the body after stripping the paint off with oven cleaner.
