Corvette split window coupe
Seems like I seen somewhere that this was a '68, But I can't locate that now. The only info I have on this baggie of started parts is stamped inside the spare tire well.

Anyway, being the non-conformist that I am, I would have liked to pro-street this, even though I have no nice salvage stash in this scale.
In my junk yard (1:24 scale stuff), I found a monster truck with most of it's parts. Would those wheels/tires be big enough and modifiable ?
As you can see in the photo, I started trimming off the tread lugs thinking I might be able to narrow them. Kind of reverse of how I widened the Triumph motorcycle's rear wheel.
Alas. That left the tread EXTREMELY thin and flimsy.
I had planned to cut these anyway, So, why not fill them with plaster for solidness?
I found a piece of PCV tubing, and cut a couple pieces to be the centers. More solidness, and filled them with plaster.
This is looking less feasable by the minute.
To be continued.......

Re: Corvette split window coupe
No way those tires were ever going to ever going to look ok as they were.
So. this morning, I went to plan 'B'. Scrapped the plaster idea, Pro street is out for lack of decent wheels. Good thing I started this build in race cars, because it looks like I can go with entry level drag racer. (is that 'bracket'racing?). For whatever reason, PO had put roll bars in the stock interior, so that helped making this decision.
But I still had to have wheels. Those inch and seven eighths PCV tubes I cut, looked pretty good for tire size.
When I cut off the end cap on the outside of the monster wheels, I was pleasantly surprised to see hub and lug nut detail way down in there. I hadn't expected that, but what a bonus !
To cut them down, I sectioned the monster setup in 3 pieces, to keep the inside details and the outer rim lip. Stock one in red in the rear.
Plan 'B' calls for using the sidewalls of the monster tires, the PCV for the slick tread. sidewalls to be trimmed and mated to the PCV
Side walls making it a bit tight inside the body, but it looks pretty good. I think I will have to make some flares on the lower body to open up the wheel wells that curve inward so severe at the bottom. That ought to help the tire situation....I hope.

This wheel/ tire idea is not working out so well. I may have to think this over !

Re: Corvette split window coupe
OK, I have decided to abandon those tires/wheels. Just ain't working and the end result wouldn't have been so acceptable anyway.
Looking in the salvage yard for some rear frame kickups that I could use, I came upon this overlooked smaller monster truck ! It appears to be a toylike thing like Matchbox, but it has Revell stamped inside.
The wheels are a better size but, the plastic looked suspicious, and a brief test with Bondo proved that Bondo doesn't adhere to them. Testing some more, but if it doesn't turn out, I may have to build this as (shudder) stock !

I have seen some pretty good looking tires made from Spray Paint caps. Just food for thought.

Excellent bashing! Looking forward to seeing the mutation, especially with the monster wheel plan.

Re: Corvette split window coupe
Still working on the rear wheels, but have turned to looking at the engine.
Can't have a stock engine in a drag racer even if it is a low budget entry level. So, I have to make something up. Going for a turbo look. This will be imagineering,so, no picking at it, please. Found a couple of Carbs in the stash that were about the same size as the tacky looking one that was on this big engine. Strange.
The body of the turbos is being made from the rear sections of a resin Lenco tranny.
The piping is craft cord.

Re: Corvette split window coupe
Those smaller monster wheels seemed to be cast in pure Teflon. NOTHING sticks to them!
Rummaging through the salvage bins, I came across the remnants of a Kenmore truck !
Plan 'C' implemented. I have formed some sheet plastic and will add a layer to the tread of the duallys. Looks workable.
Added bonus, i found some front wheels that I can thin down and will look a lot better on the front than the 'Vette hubcaps !

Looking good Clay. The 63 splitwindow is the only vette I have ever liked, almost bought one in 63 but waited and got a 289 Shelby Cobra instead.

Friend of mine had one in Michigan. He avowed that he never let one drop of snow land on it. It was pristine in '68.

Re: Corvette split window coupe
I have been having problems with picture hosting sites.
I have used the Tinypic site a couple of times, but the last 3 times, I encountered pornograhic virus threats that locked up my computer. I had to unplug it and reboot. The first two times I returned to the Tinypic site and was able to get the photos hooked up and posted here. This morning, when I rebooted, I ran my Malware scan and found only potential threats (a lot). But, still I am wary of going back to Tinypic site.
Any other suggestions for me ?
The overlaid dually tires into slicks turned out really good. I'll post photos when I am reassured. Meanwhile, I am able to post in my Facebook site in photo album titled, "Big Vette"

Looking great! The Plan C tires look very cool, here's hoping you work out the assorted issues. And if not there's still a lot of letters left in the alphabet

John, I got on the bad side of the hosting program here. It would set my photos real huge. That's why I went to a hosting site (Tinypics). I may try the host image here again, but if it goes thru huge again, I will delete it before sending. I don't like oversize photos either on the forum.
( ****)
No dice ! It came thru HUGE on the preview, so I deleted it

Re: Corvette split window coupe
Aw, Fer cryin' out loud !! I totally overlooked that sizing box !! Thanks, Speedracer !
Y'all please realize that in exactly 25 days, I will turn 83 YO. I'm not as sharp as I used to be !
Here are the pics of the overlaid duallys turned into slicks. I have started painting in the second photo
Now I have to narrow the rear of the Vettes frame and place some tubs !
