I'm thrilled with the detail on cockpits and engines. Decades ago even larger scale planes had minimal engine details. Tamiya planes here in the States seemed to lead the way in better models (for a price).
Thanx again for a good group build!

2whl:  Impressive looking engine.

Cole:  Are you going to have to fill the seam of the cockpit glass?  The windows' framework seems to be a contiguous part of the fuselage sheetmetal.

I got the other lower wing attached - again nipping bits off the struts until all 6 contacted both wings.

The one side seems to be much higher than the other in the picture, but only measures between 1/16th and 1/8th of an inch.  The cause may be in one of the engines not being installed perfectly vertical and affecting strut distances.  It is what it is, I guess.

Nice work guys !

I put the landing gear bays into the wing lowers, then put the top skins on.

I didn't like the color on the exhaust manifolds, so i brushed some thinned down flat black onto them.  Then I dry fit the engine onto the fuselage and also tried the cowling.

Exhausts do look better with some black. Leaks were common, exhaust and oil, so grimy spots add to the realism.

Paul, Mike, and 2whl; you're doing some fine work.

Progress has been slow on the flying boat. The wing is now complete, but there are a number of large seams to deal with. I was quite surprised to realize the wing is wider than the fuselage is long.

Like the WWI plane built here before, for long flights over water, big wings were essential. Love the work!

That is a large aircraft, Cole.  It's going to take up a lot of display area.

The landing gears are done.

And the wing is done also.   So I mated it to the fuselage

Nice. The joining of the fuselage and wing appears flawless.

2whl:  Landing gear looks great - are those painted tires or real rubber?

Cole:  Nice work.  Big wing aircraft are really cool.

I'm calling this one complete.  It was a fun build and came out pretty good (I think).  If I ever do one of these with add-on turnbuckles I'll be sure to do a lot more planning ahead.  The linkage that actuated top and lower flaps ended up being short because of the added distance from the turnbuckles.  So I made up a sort of clevis for the top connection to take up the slack.

Thanks for your comments,
Mike

Mike, they are rubber tires.   And your plane looks great.

I put the elevators on and started the decals

Added the cooling flaps to the engine.  It'll go on when I get the decals done.

The Soviet plane is something rare to me. This group build is itself a winner!

With the decals done, the engine got mounted up.

Tamiya supplied masks for the canopy.  But they were not cut out, so I had to spend some time cutting out each window pane(pain).  Then I sprayed the exterior color and peeled the masks off.

The zero is a real bit of history brought into reality, congrats! I remember reading some model mags on masking off canopies for painting. It's even more tedious in small scale, the article showed. Thanx to all for a good group build idea, happy holidays!
