77 GMC towtruck
One ancient kit here. The top half of the engine is moulded into the body, the bottom half into the chassis. That won't do so stay tuned for the "Attack of the Dremel" ( rated X!)
Box art, and not my pic either.
Since I just happened to have the remains of a Dana 60 front axle, its going to be a 4WD version. Makes sense, since the kit has cart springs and
a solid front axle, whereas the 1:1 have independent with coils. Shock mounts to follow. No shocks in the kit, so the parts bin gets raided. Again.
I've used the kit springs- which are not great, but will suffice. Original ends too. The tie rod was moulded with the springs, that had to go too.
So here's the front axle, halfway along.

Reminds me of the better one that was similar, was it called "the midnight cowboy?" Good beginning.

Often thought about doing this one myself. I'll be following Chris.

At this stage, Al I think you'd be better off using the tow truck section, wheels and rear axle, and use a donor kit for the rest.
The interior is a joke. Four pieces, and that includes the gear lever!
Enough ranting! I've plundered the parts bin for a big block V8, it's about to get wired & plumbed.
I'm mocking up the drive shafts, transfer case & shock mounts here. The transfer case hole keeps getting bigger & bigger.
I've also cut the kit 'engine & gearbox out of the cab and the chassis too. Engine mounts to follow.

Not the usual kit, for sure.

Looks great so far. The interior hump for a lot of the 4-wd trucks was large. I once rode in a Blazer with almost no passenger side foot room. Best to you in the rest of the build.

They got that bit right! There's very little legroom either side of the tunnel. I've had to take a whisker out of the interior floor, most of the butchery
was on the chassis & floor around the transfer case.

Engine in and wired. Headers are SBC and modified to suit the port spacing on a BBC. I've added shocks front and back too.

Mufflers on. Tailpipes to come.
The so called interior got a more realistic steering wheel, a gear lever, with the kit lever now serving as transfer case lever.
I added pedals as well as the bump in the column for the igniton key.
Shot a guide coat of surplus green at it today

There's a roof insert with clearance lights to come. Good point though.

Re: 77 GMC towtruck
Excellent work on the chassis and engine and that green is very nice - utility feeling but still rich and deep.

Re: 77 GMC towtruck
Oh so close now! Mirrors and 'rigging' next. One thread for the cable isn't exactly HMS Victory!
This kit is really showing it's age. No flash, but the general design leaves a lot to be desired.
That said, you can make something of it.
For the best result, you'd use the tow truck body & boom on a better cab & chassis.
