Monogram Rat Vega
I made a start on a Monogram Rat Vega a few weeks ago. I began by building the engine then filled in the ejector pin marks etc on the interior and underside.
Since then the body has been given a coat of primer.
The exhausts and axles had the chrome stripped off so that the mould seams could be sanded down, followed by a couple of coats of Chrome Silver spray paint before being fitted to the painted underside.

Looking good Tim. I don't think I have seen this kit before.

Its the only one I've ever seen too. Mind you, the last time it was issued was back in 1973 so its not really surprising that you don't see many about.

A very unique kit (I've never heard of it myself). Looking forward to seeing this develop.

Re: Monogram Rat Vega
I used to see them quite often at old model shows/conventions. Certainly one of the unusual kits! I wish Monogram had been more in making the wild customs/rods more realistically detailed as to engines and suspensions, but I guess the finished look meant more than realism to young modelers. Best to you in your completion.

Yes, a member of the IPMS Hot Rod & Custom Car SIG was selling off some of his stash.

I haven't been on that SIG for a LONG time!! Is it still going? and is Jim Whalen still on there?

The SIG is still going but have moved from the forum they had to a Facebook group. Jim Whalen is still a SIG member as well as being a member of a local model club that I'm also a member of.

Re: Monogram Rat Vega
Great job on this one. I find this kit very rare. Only the second one I have seen. The other was at a model show, it was for sale $150.00 USD.

Wow, that's a lot. I paid £20.00 for this one, which works out to just over $25.00. I guess that's one advantage of living in the UK, sometimes you can pick up a bargain as people don't realise how rare some kits are.

Re: Monogram Rat Vega
A bit of progress on this one. After a few rounds of PSR to remove the seam where the rear panel joins it's had a few coats of white primer ready for the Tamiya Brilliant Orange topcoat.

Re: Monogram Rat Vega
Despite the lack of updates there has been some progress on this. The body was given a few coats of Tamiya Brilliant Orange, which looks close to the colour on the box art.
As the decals are 44 years old I thought I'd use the license plate to test what condition they were in. Sure enough it began to break up so the other decals were given a few coats of varnish to hopefully keep them intact. There were a few cracks when I put them on but apart from that they went on OK.
The rear lights have been fitted too so there's not much left to do now.

Looking good Tim, as the owner of lots of old stuff, what did you coat the decals with?

Re: Monogram Rat Vega
I'm not sure exactly what it was as the label had faded so much I could hardly read it but judging from the finish I think it was Humbrol Matt Cote varnish.

Re: Monogram Rat Vega
So any acrylic clear should work, like Halfords?
I've never tried it because I'd imagine it would crack on any compound curve.

Re: Monogram Rat Vega
I would think so. Luckily these didn't have to conform to any compound curves.
