PostSubject: Air Fix 1/144 Boeing 727   Sat 19 Nov 2016, 6:54 pm

Our (Karen's),  20yr old niece Sara is down for the weekend and wanted to build an air liner, since she travels a lot.

Sara is a high functional special needs person, is a multi gold metal winning Special Olympian for track and field, is heading to Austria this winter for the winter games to compete in speed skating.

She was never suppose to walk or even talk. She has had dozens of various surgeries in order to correct a number of neurological and skeletal formation issues. Through it all she has been a trooper.

She has a regular job at a fitness club as a day care assistant and also volunteers at a retirement home twice a week in the hair salon where she brings residents to the salon for their appointments.

She has what is called Dandy Walkers, it is a complication of Down syndrome, autism, and a couple other syndromes that escape me at the moment.

Anyway she is an awesome person and one of the most positive people in my life. I try to think of her when I don't feel like getting out of bed some mornings.

Off we went to the model shop, she picked out this, and I didn't get a damn thing. Think that is a first for me.

I have never taught anyone how to build a model. Seems teaching the glueing is the biggest challenge.

I'm thinking gluebomb, we'll see.
She is already talking about future builds.

Cool, my old friend's little sister has Downs, she's the sweetest girl you could ever meet.

There was one time I hadn't seen her for over ten years, she came straight over to me. said hello and gave me a huge hug.

Go Curt!

Thanks Shay, she is also very sweet and damn smart, she's a real a wiz with her iPhone. Seems to have incredible pattients for building too.

Sara has done all the trimming and test fitting and any sanding, she did the assembling of the wings and engines. She asked me If I would do "that big part".
I used gel glue on the fuselage. Man I forgot how much of a pain that stuff can be to use when it is fresh, first time using it in years.

This is it for now. Painting it tonight, going to give Sara a crack with the air brush.

What a GOOD story, it makes my day! Too many people dismiss the possibilities for growth for so many others on earth. Thanx for the project and fotos.

Ok so I had to share this. It brought a tear to my eye.

So we are attaching the landing gear covers. I am explaining/showing Sara how to use blue tac to hold the part to place it, she then speaks up and says "I can use the tweezers to guid the part and hold it so it doesn't stick to the blue stuff" this is coming from a person who doesn't have the mental ability to relize four quarters equal $1.00.

This photo is staged but the mechanics of the actual task were completed and initiated by Sara.

Thanks Gary.

With some basic instructions and literal hand holding to help with the biomechanics and Sara was off on her own. First couple coats done.

Spraying seems almost magic, sometimes it goes great, sometimes it's a pain. I believe it's as much a calm attitude and patience as of skill. Nice work getting the fuselage halves together so beautifully. Best to you on the finish. I luv the Alitalia decal design, if you're going with that. The Alitalia Stratos rally machines were the coolest.

Shay, you usually have them on when we Skype, lol.

Thank you all for the very kind words and interest fellas.

Sara was very proud of the progress and super excited to get more paint on it. Sara truly did the brunt of the work. I didn't want this to end up being a "kids (parents) school project". I instructed and guided her, Sara did the labour. Other then the couple of "quided hand held" passes with the AB Sara did the painting.

If you saw it in person it would look just like any of the ones we would have done when we first got started, glue spots and the odd finger print.

The trousers are PJ's, yesterday was PJ's and model building day.

We won't be able to finish it until closer to Christmas.

Harron, Sara has chossen the Air Canada livery. I thought of the ralley cars too, these decals would work great.

Just caught up with this thread - a beautiful tale and inspiring 'to the max' in so many ways. Thank you for sharing this with us and I look forward to further posts, but she does sound like she's got quite the itinerary coming up. All the best
