Weathered Broncho Empty Weathered Broncho

Post by Guest Sun 06 Nov 2016, 6:27 pm

A couple of nights ago a good friend showed up at my door carrying a Revell Broncho kit.  He told me he bought it intending to  replicate his Broncho that he recently got before starting restoration.  Having done that when he looked at the kit he realized that he does not have the skills to do justice to the kit.

Soooooooooooooo, John will you build this kit for me.  This guy is one of my best friends so there was no way I was going to turn him down.  So here are some photos of the 1/1 vehicle that I am going to replicate.

As you can see in this shot the paint is in really bad shape.  I'm thinking of using the salt technique to get the proper look, but am open to any suggestions you guys may have.

I need to get full body shots from all four sides, but my friend has to get the car out to where I can get positioned.  Should get them this week and then will be able to get started.  Stand by, I've never attempted to so closely replicate an existing car.  We'll see how it goes.

Looks like this will be a cool build indeed. I don't know if the salt effect will be ... effective, I guess? That kind of paint weathering isn't the same as rust patches. However, I'm not up on paint weathering techniques so I do not have an alternative to offer. Regardless, I look forward to seeing how you tackle this Weathered Broncho 1705482731

Were there Bronco kits? I saw some Explorers and pickups and Chevys of various types. Looks like almost no rust, just peeling paint. I'll be watching this really closely. Best to you!

Here is the box art and the obligatory spru shots.

There is very little flash, obviously new dies. The kit appears as if it will be a pretty straight forward build. The only real challenge will be the painting and weathering. I will post more as appropriate.

That paint could be very difficult to replicate John but here's an idea for you.

Make up a VERY strong salt solution (until no more salt will dissolve) in warm water and add a little washing up liquid to take away some of the tension.

Paint the model with matt paint. When properly dry, apply the water to the body with the surface level so the water doesn't run off. Let it dry naturally. I think when dry you may well be left with salt 'stains' which I think will replicate your paint. Gloss coat to finish.

May work, may not. Test on some scrap first though!!!

I agree with Al on the matt/gloss application. To achieve the ragged edges I would tear masking tape by hand.
As for the silvering edges, Al's idea could work. Although I foresee an issue on where the edge will end up, I like it though.
I am thinking a fine detail brush cut back to a nub used to dab a silver/white/grey mixture along the edge, either with or without the masking tape.
You'll figure it out John.

Like the Blazer, the Bronco is full of possibilities. Thanx for the pix of the parts. We can get an idea of how it goes together and ease of modifying it. The separate interior panels are always a welcome sight since painting, detailing, carpeting become easier. Best o' luck!
