Re: Proud to be British..............
Apparently, salt is not a suitable surface on which to run a metal wheeled car John, as it's too harsh on the titanium wheels needed for such high speeds.
Blackrock??
(Taken from the Bloodhound SSC website)
"surely BLOODHOUND will return to the Black Rock Desert? Sadly, no. A lack of rain over the last decade, together with increasingly heavy use for the playa surface (principly by the annual Burning Man festival) has left the Black Rock surface in poor condition. It is bumpy, crumbly, rutted and uneven for much of its 140+ square mile surface and is not currently a suitable surface on which to run a car like BLOODHOUND"

Seems like some of the old land sped runs were on Daytona Beach. Probably too crowded in this day and age to try these kind of speeds.
Wonder why salt would be detrimental for titanium wheels?

With speeds they're after so high, a not-the-most-smooth salt surface isn't stable or hard enuf either. I lost interest after they went from piston engines powering wheels to "rocket cars." To me these are more like high tech planes without full wings. Further, the cost and complexity moved their creation from single men or small groups working at small places, to big budget team systems. Hardly the stuff of the common people. Auto racing in general has grown into similar practices, losing the "man with a dream" aspect where one could take credit for all the work himself. Such is the evolution of progress in this complex world.

Re: Proud to be British..............
She had her first proper outing within the last hour.
How much power does she have? 6 times the entire power of the whole 20 cars on a Formula one grid!!! That's around 100,000 bhp!!!!!!!
Got goose bumps on my arms watching it. If you want to just watch the runs, (just ove 200mph) cue through to about 46 and 36 minutes. (the counter runs down not up)

Whenever I see things like this I always think of a quote from the movie Scarface (with Pacino). "Nothing exceeds like excess."
Very cool.
