There's gotta be an easier way to do "zim..." Back some 4 decades ago I was in a model contest where a man put some on a tank. I would think a thin coat of slow drying stuff, then stamped with a small tool with demarcation lines could simulate it. I can't imagine shaping and cutting that many tiny pieces to fit. No wonder the foiling goes easier! In any case you can have pride in a hard won job and success.

Thanks Cole. As I said it was tedious, but I think in the final analysis it will have been worth the effort.

Harron, I just wish there was an easier way. I know that some guys use putty, but for me that would be a god awful mess. I think this peel and stick stuff is probably the best way to go.

The tracks are now on and settling in to the road wheels. I have started a very simple base using Gunze dark ground and Testor's snow effect. Al; you were quite right about dirtying up certain areas. After that, all that remains is the weathering for the tracks and blending everything together.

The underbelly has been weathered even though it will not be visible when finished.

Got the shadow coat on.

I'll get started painting and weathering later today.

Cole: I should have the Elefant done in the next week or so. I intend for it to go on a small diorama. It will be placed in among trees in an ambush position. It will be similar to the dio Al just did, but there will be no buildings or walls. Hoping to get started on the base tomorrow.

PostSubject: Re: Community Build #16 "Military"   Sun 09 Oct 2016, 5:55 pm

had a few problems along the way to get this far

i wanted to do a squiggly line camo........failed once.......reprimed, put down the dark yellow and had another go.......failed.....reprimed for another go...............and my compressor died!!!.......taken til next  payday for another..........decided not to try the squiggly again since its already had so many coats, any more and im going to be getting problems cos of that!.....so went for a usual 3 colour yellow/green/brown.....it might not be the best ive done but im going to have to go with it.......its currently shiny cos its had a coat of varnish ready for the decals and then the weathering will tone it all down

ive done a bit of 'damage' to the scurzen so we shall see how that turns out in the end

Colors are pretty high contrast, but flat coat and-or dust/dirt (?) will blend it together. Battle damage always a welcome "custom" addition to a military vehicle.

The Elefant is just about done.  I still have to attach the tow cables and finish the stowage.

The tarp is made using a blue paper towel that has been rolled and dipped in a solution of paint, white glue and thinner then allowed to dry over night.

I'll get the stowage finished and applied today. I'm having a problem finding something appropriate to make the tow cables and am open to suggestion. In the meantime I plan on starting the base today or tomorrow.

As always, suggestions, criticism, praise, good natured ridicule welcome.

ive used some fine wire before now,....the sort used to make jewelery.............get two strands, put in a vice at one end, the other ends put in a battery drill and use the drill to 'wind' it up (go slowly!).......works even better if you have some cable ends (some kits have them cos you are supposed to use cotton thread)

Paul: Thanks for an excellent idea. The kit did include the cable ends, but no thread. Doesn't really meter though because I wouldn't have used thread anyway. I've got some unplated bead wire that should work. Thanks again.

Paul..... the camo looks good and will improve again when dull coated.

John..... the Zim may have been tedious but it does look good.

so ive given it a black enamel wash.....thing was i didnt have any gloss so used matt and when thinned it went sort of 'bitty' and made a dirty wash........its had some matt varnish on top which has toned everything down

i was going to do an oil spot filter but now m not sure i will bother

Thanks for the kind comments guys.  Paul, I tried your idea and here is the result.

I used #26 unplated bead wire.  I took three stands and clamped them to my bench then with a set of flat nose pliers I twisted the wires until they took on the appearance of cable.  I then used the kit cable  ends to complete the cable.  I think when the weathering is done this will be pretty convincing.  Thanks for the idea, it  will be used again I'm sure.

had a few problems fixing the scurzen on, especially on the left hand side.....which is why ive made that side the battle damage side......next step is work out some 'cargo' and greebles to make it look a bit more used and then some light muddying up, nothing too much
