The paint looks good despite the 'junk' that got mixed in. One thing I do when painting (not a lot admittedly but I used to paint more in the past) is try to get one light coming in at an acute angle to give me a surface reflection reference. This can be a bit touchy because you can't just blast light into the paintbox willy nilly or you can cause 'flare obscuration' which makes clear visibility somewhat problematic. I'm sure that sanding and clearing will give a great result. Revell 64 Fairlane - Page 2 1705482731

I put the clear on tonight. I definitely had the pressure too high as I had cob webbing around the window frames. I also probably need to thin the clear a little even though it is ready to shoot from the can. The clear is for using a full sized gun.

The hood is much shiner than the body, but it didn't have any orange peel.

I know why I had orange peel on the body. I had originally mixed the paint three months ago and some of the lacquer thinner evaporated as the fricken caps don't seal worth a damn on the bottles.

I'll get the pics up tomorrow as I want it dry. Then next weekend it will get polished out.

Yes. I put enough clear on I shouldn't have a problem with sand through. Revell 64 Fairlane - Page 2 1792231099

I should have thinned the clear a little. I also should have re-thinned the base coat. I shouldn't have relied on the cap on the paint jar making a good seal.

Oh well live & learn. I'm enjoying building too much to care.

Wow, did I just say that? Revell 64 Fairlane - Page 2 3298140763

Keep going!

The 'enjoying the build too much to care' part is something I can relate to. The colour looks good, and the learning curve of the painting world is just that (I speak as one who makes many errors despite scads of prep and thinking it through).

The lighting makes it look worse than it is.

I'm very confident that I can wet sand out the orange peel. Revell 64 Fairlane - Page 2 3887228019

But all is not lost. I'm going to rattle can it with this. It's a littte lighter, but is darn close.

This is a cab of an AMT 350 dually painted with it. I have a Revell race car trailer I built to go with the truck so with a matching car it will look quite spiffy.

The new color is on. No clear, I just rubbed it out using Novus 2.

I did have a long talk with my body man as he tried to fit the hood before the paint had fully cured and he put a couple of marks on the top of both front fenders.

And you laugh at me for using Rattle Cans Dan Revell 64 Fairlane - Page 2 2704104872

I can't belieive you actually sand it down that far, I know it was as lumpy as my backside, but what about polishing compound?

As bad as it was, polishing compound wouldn't have touched it. I started with 2400 grit and it took quite a bit of sanding. That is why I went completely down to the plastic.

Had I thinned the paint down when j thought it was a little thick, I'd been o.k. as it wouldn't have orange peeled.

Yes, it needed actual sanding as opposed to polishing, but did you really need to go down that far?

Yes I did. The back edge of the roof was still rough. Had I wet sanded all the way to 12,000 it would have still been visible.

I'm pleased with the new colorand, I'm learning so I'm happy.

Honestly all the side trim this car has would have made it a pain if not impossible to get smooth without going down to the plastic.
