Lotus 72C dual build Empty Lotus 72C dual build

Post by Guest Sat 02 Mar 2013, 8:09 pm

A while back, I showed Al sprue shots of the (then) new Ebbro Lotus 72. He was so impressed after seeing them, that he went and bought one. Since we both were excited about getting to build them, we decided to do a dual build. The kit gives the option of doing two different versions of the car. I've decided to do the Britsh GP version.

The question is, will you be finished before Al finds his key.

Very excellent idea and rare kits! They were important steps in the evolution of F-1 and help us see how technology evolves. They looked much like the Indy cars then and they shared ideas. I'll be following the work, thanks!

Well with all the hard work on the site set up, behind us, I have eventually got back to the bench!!!
This is where I am at. There is a choice of low or high airboxes with British and german GP decals. The cars in those races used the low version but I am sore tempted to use the high one. It just looks so much cooler. (Yeah!! I get the pun!)
Body bits in base red only. Clear coat to follow.

This is the original kit instrument panel. Not bad at all but let's see if I can improve it!

Time to get back to this one.

Tonight I drove myself bonkers and did the P/E seat belts. I normaly use masking tape for the belts but this time I decided to use ribbon.

Not overly happy with them but they are what they are.

Threading that ribbon through those little clips is not an easy task. You did an excellent job Al.

It's doing my head in just thinking about threading that ribbon through the buckles, etc.

Quality work all the way, Al.

Cheers,

Thanks guys.

I finished up and installed the dashboard this morning. I tried to give it a bit of a raced look.

I sanded off the kits molded in instrument bezels and replaced them with some anglers 'rig rings' over the decals. Then filled with two part clear epoxy.

I also replaced the molded in switches and buttons with aftermarket parts.

Finally, since the rear of the dash is very visible, I wired the instruments and switches.

Cracking on now. Should be finished in a few days.

I've read elsewhere that this kit is up to modern Tamiya standard..... well IMO they still have someway to go.

Got the front suspension built and mounted to the monocoque. Plumbed the brake and clutch cylinders. Next will be to route the wires etc to the engine.
