I have had that happen to my paint jobs. I was told by other modelers that the reason is not letting the paint gas out before adding clear coat. Not sure if that;s true but I do see how it could be. The SABA guys have mostly been at this a lot longer than me and are pretty sharp.

Hope they can sort you out with new parts.

I heard back from them today. They say they can supply me with a new main body plus the two bonnet halves, for approx 10 Euros including shipping. The proviso being 'if available'. So I'm just waiting to here back from them.

On to the heart of the beast, the engine and what a beast of an engine it is!!! It's enormous!!!

6 potter, single ohc and twenty four valves......... very advanced for 1923 or earlier. (The engine is an aero engine)

Here is a mock up:

Fiat SB4 Eldridge (Mefistofele) - Page 4 00416

Fiat SB4 Eldridge (Mefistofele) - Page 4 00317

The kit provides actual metal springs to represent the valve springs BUT they are 3 coils short of the real deal and therefore look a little spindly. May have to look for some alternative, maybe cheap Biro's!!!  (need 24!! LOL) Any other source ideas guys?

The springs are also too shiny, so will need to be dulled down some. Any suggestions other than paint would be most welcome.

You will notice too, that there are no valve stems inside the springs. I'll need to take care of that too. How on Earth, could Italeri miss including those!!

Installing just the one valve spring for this mock up, gave me palpitations in case it was claimed by the carpet monster. Installing valve stems first, should, I hope make it a little safer!

The kit provides the nuts detail marked with a red arrow in this photo but not the ones marked with the yellow arrow.

Fiat SB4 Eldridge (Mefistofele) - Page 4 59155511

Anyone know of a source of tiny nuts. Styrene/cast metal etc?  If not I may consider making some from hex styrene rod. The real problem with that is getting them all the same thickness, even with a guillotine!

Al, here's a link to miniature nuts that might be the size you need. If the size works, you'll probabley need to find a vendor who will sell you a small amount. Don't figure you'll need a gross.

Could you wind some ultra fine solder around a styrene rod? The real engine looks like the springs are a larger diameter, possibly with a set of inner springs, thus blocking the view of the valve stems.

Thanks very much for that link Mike but as I would need 24 (three packs) of the M.06 size, £27.00 is a bit too spendy for such a small detail. I'll probably end up making some from hexagonal styrene rod.

Your idea on the springs is a good one but I think I'll try winding along the threads along a suitable size bolt instead. I think it may be easier to get the spacing more consistent.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Again on the springs, I think it probably used single springs. Check this video at 2.20.

Sheesh, what an ordeal just to start it up...

I doubt it had double valve springs. As big as all the parts are I doubt it saw an RPM much over 2500.

That one shot in the video reminded me of a story my grandpa used to tell. There was and guy back in his home town that had a model T and when he parked it he put a coffee tin can under it to catch the oil drippings. When he got ready to go he would pour the oil from the can back in the engine and head on his way...

I guess if you can't fix the leak then that's the next best thing.

Al I would try putting the valve springs on with the model in a box of some kind. Then if the spring takes off the box will confine it. Just a thought.

Not even that Mitch, Wiki has it at 300 bhp at 1700 rpm.

And it's a good one Buck for the original kit springs but I think I'm going to make my own.

I wound some 28 gauge beading wire around some 2mm styrene rod. It's JUST not large enough in diameter to fit cleanly over the top shoulder, so I'll probably have to open up the top coil a tad to get it to seat properly.

What do you think guys?

Making the first spring was easy enough, however getting the next 23 to be exactly the same, is not so easy AND very repetitive. And I think most of you know, I HATE repetitive work!!

So I went looking for some ready made springs and came up with these:

Fiat SB4 Eldridge (Mefistofele) - Page 4 Kgrhqn10

2mm ID and 7-10mm long.

And at just £2.59 for 50, they HAVE to be worth a punt!!
