I have made some blocks from plaster, and carved forms for the front and back windows.( MESSY!) I'm waiting to get acetate like Buck suggested and then I'll be trying to vacuum form with my handy dandy Wizdon suck machine. I figgure I'll need enough for a few tries.

That's a mean looking grille. I like it. I'm sure you will work something out for the window.

The plastic in 2 liter bottles is supposed to be the good stuff, clay.

Somehow, I figured I would have to have flat stuff, Don. I'll look into that.

Great work Clay (as usual). Although I haven't tried it, the PET plastic in the 2 liter bottles shrinks when heat is applied. By cutting a cylinder of the stuff and placing your mold against a hard surface (tin can, piece of wood, brick?) and hitting it with a mini torch or heat gun it pulls tight against the mold. The photos I saw showed a peanut can as the backer and it was crushed.

Since the PET plastic shrinks when heated, I'm not sure it would work well with a vacuum system. For that the plastic needs to soften and sag before you suck it into place.

OBTW, any idea of where you got the grille? Pretty sure it's a De Soto and they are so classic in customs.

Dave, I'm finding that out. Liter plastic just curls up and doesn't soften at all. I have tried and abandoned some other stuff also. I'll look into your suggestion. I thought that was a piece of a DeSoto grille also.Thanks.
If I have anything to brag about with this build, it's that I haven't thrown it against yon far wall yet !

Meanwhile.  I have managed to piece enough stuff from this pile of frames to butcher up something to mount wheels on. UGLY !!!
But it's hid under the body. A hood is being bashed from another salvage find.

Clay, check your email. Once I have your email address I'll send you the how to article. It looks pretty straight forward.

Slogging thru the windshield problem. Hood is made. It will be closed, this'll be a curbside, more or less, with no engine.
Meanwhile, I'm bashing up an interior and the salvage pile puked out an older Corvette dash that I'll have to widen a bit.

That should do the trick. Could you use the thickness of the door panels on each sides to make it fit? Just a thought.

I have removed the side panels from the interior tub, Shelby. They wouldn't have fit. I'll have to find some different ones in the salvage, and they'll be fitted and attached to the inner side of the body shell. My usual method of dealing with parts that weren't designed to go together.

Clay, my son made a canopy mold for a R/C airplane he built. He made a mold or buck out of plaster of Paris and he made his own vacuum table from a piece of peg board and a box. Then used our Dyson vacuum to provide the negative air pressure... I think he used ABS. I'm sure he has some scraps big enough for you to make a windshield out of. PM me if would like me to send you a piece of the stuff he has. A piece the size of a standard letter envelope should be enough for you.

Speedracer,
When I built the skull themed model. I had made a  windshield for the funny car top using a reworked  hood as a buck, and used  a similar vacuum form table as you have described. It was made from a how-to post that Wizdon had put up.  I got a decent windshield out of it. This one will have a little more complicated contour. I'll be looking for some suitable pastry lid plastic next time we go to WinDixie.
I'll get there !

The vacuum forming of the windshield has defeated me. Plastic blanks for vacuum forming were in the new hobby catalog that arrived earlier this week. 12 bucks for a couple of 11 X 5 inch pieces. Not going to happen on my SS budget.
So, a trip to Win Dixie for groceries got me this. Usable top and bottom plastic - 10 X 5 inch - plus, a 10 inch roll of blueberry Danish!  4 bucks.
Wizdon Corvette Impala - Page 2 000_2683_zpsjjz6yyis
Even this thin plastic was unable to completely form over the buck without folds developing. Before I shut off the Wisdon Suck Machine, I draped a piece of sandwich baggie over it and even that couldn't form with out folds. That's when I knew I was defeated !
Wizdon Corvette Impala - Page 2 1704234926
To the salvage yard ! I came up with a windshield frame from a 60 Ford Sunliner. Modifying to fit, and I'm shaping a piece of the roof to vacuum form a windshield over. Slight curvature that I think I'll have no problem with.
Wizdon Corvette Impala - Page 2 000_2684_zpsqaal3zj5

Starting to get a tad ugly ! The new hood has been glued in in place to add rigidity as I butcher into the cowl section.

Blueberry Danish is my favorite, Great choice. I looked in my stash to see if I had a 57 Corvette donor kit I could send you for the windshield and other stuff, but I don't. Sorry. I am sure you are on track with what you are doing.

Tho I miss the idea of a true-to-life rendition of it, sometimes necessity makes for changes.  Clever idea, but I get "last day they can sell it" coffee cake $1.99 when I feel a need to spoil myself.  Tho I don't build anymore, I've saved those clear plastic boxes!  Thanx for sharing your creativity!

Still plugging away. Fine tuning the bodywork of the windshield. I turned to the rear. I thought of 59 Caddy tail lights for this, but was long out of them in the salvage yard. This panel (Chev ??) fit pretty good below the break. However, the PO glued all of the lens' pretty sloppily catywonkus, but the glue he used was excellent. Can't get them removed, so I'll have to live with it !
Wizdon Corvette Impala - Page 2 000_2687_zpsadxbdv44

The lower right rear valance was warped really bad. I built up some plastic strips prior to Bondo.

It's too bad you couldn't make the windshield work but you recovered nicely. I like the taillights it really turns this into quite the custom.
