PostSubject: Re: Community Build #9 Military    Sun 19 Jul 2015, 12:48 pm

so im a bit stuck with the M60 cos ive given it an oil wash, i always like to give it at least a week to dry off before doing anything else to it

so thought id start something else to keep me occupied, was going to do a car but thought id do something else that fits in with the GB and i will be able to use the little dio base im going to do for the M60

so heres an oldie.....according to Scalemates it originally came out in late '60s, got improved/repopped in 1971 which is the stamp that this carries in the hull, think its been in the catalogue ever since!! definatly gets tagged as a 'classic kit' i think

obviously not up to modern standards detail wise but im still impressed with the moulding, no flash etc, proves that if you invest in the tooling and you look after it, it will last a long time

plan is to do it as an Afrika Korps vehicle with the few figures that come with it, nothing special

ive done my usual trick of adding some mass to the hull and bonding in a nut so i canuse some threaded rod as a handle, the weight will make it sit on the tracks a bit better. i usually use some big nuts but the hull is so small ive used something else......12 gauge lead balls, left overs from back in the day when i used to cast lead bullets of various calibres and reload my own ammo

This kit brings back memories. I built it back in 1975 when I went to stay at my cousins house. I'll be watching this with interest. Good luck Paul.

Built this a while ago ... couldn't find anything wrong with the vehicle..

As you say Paul, the detailing is really good for a cheap kit and for saying how old the moulds are

If i had one gripe, it would be that the figures look a bit awkward in their posture, even though they're supposed to be in "mid action"

p.s. you haven't got any moulds for .223 round shot knocking around have you??

Got an old (1938) Webley service Mk2 with two barrels, one smooth bore and one with worn rifling, the extra 3 thou gives it a better seal... you can't seem to get decent oversize stuff at the mo.

That's a nice little kit Colin, you should enjoy building it.

Looks like a decent kit Paul. Did you forget the machine gun?

nope, nor the tools......different colour so i tend to paint them and add at the end

ive watched people who totally build up a model tank then paint it and i wonder how do they do it with all the gubbins on......i find it easier to do it as seperates

Just a sprue shot

Two of them and ....... dare i say it...... there's little to no flash on them !!!

No flexi rubber tracks either, they're solid and on the sprue, last time i had a few "profanity moments" getting the wheels to sit right

so sorting out the paint for the M60 was a pain.....doing it for a tiddler Panzer was easy.....its German so its RAL1027 lol lol

i had a go at preshading again but i used a darker brown as its a darker yellow than the sand colour on the M60....not sure how well it went but its going to get a brownish oil wash soon so it will get blended/highlighted anyway

its shiny cos its had a coat of Klear for the decals and to make it ready for the wash

not impressed with Tamiya instructions for the decals, a little confusing since its all in Japanese lol.......so ive had to use a little artistic license lol

This (surprisingly enough for Airfix) is falling together .. i'm quite impressed with the quality of the moulding for once.

Lower hull and tracks have a base coat

Detail quite good

Just a little help needed to get the wheels to sit over the studs

inner road wheels in place and tracks situated ....

so me and swmbo have had a few days away which has given the oil wash a chance to dry off although it dosnt seem that noticable in the pics, given it a coat of matt varnish to dull it all down too

planning on a pigment wash to mucky up the road wheels a bit

tracks next, which aint my favorite thing

Wheels all on and base coated ... going to have several washes so the base coat only needs to be roughly done .. but fairly even

All the gubbins and greebles added ready for second coat, this should make the already painted parts a little deeper and give a little eye relief on the raised/added bits ... the only way to do it when hand painting as you can't really preshade as Paul has done above.

calling this done

it all suddenly came together

used one of those Tamiya weathering kits to add some black soot to the rear of the engine vents, could have done with a little more i think.....added some sand pigment to the tracks and road wheels to dirty them up a little

added bits and bobs to the bustle

knocked up a base with a sheet of polystyrene packaging, loads of pva then sprinkled with sand, didnt get the effect i was after so ended up paining with some cheapo poster paint....plan is to use this for the Panzer II as well

more pics in the finished thread
