Group build on another site.

1935 Mercedes-Benz 500K Post-210

Old Johan kit dating back to the 1970's with a fair bit of flash etc as would be expected back then.

The body lines on this car are drop dead gorgeous IMO:....

1935 Mercedes-Benz 500K Dscn2322

.... and while the fit of the body to fenders appears to be nigh on perfect, these aren't so clever!!

1935 Mercedes-Benz 500K 00129

1935 Mercedes-Benz 500K 00223

Perfectly fixable, just a tad dissapointing is all.

Hi Al,

This look's like a beautiful car and can't wait to see her come to life, 'tis a shame about the bits in the last two photos, but I am sure you'll manage to sort them out...

Do you know if the company is still going...

The Johan classics have their shortcomings, but they do provide very nice detail other kits leave out. Looking forward to seeing you build this one, Al.

Compared to the Jo-Han models (made from unassembled promo moldings) these M.B.s were fantastic. Suspensions especially had detail and were as good as or better than the U.S. Monogram 540K.  These are primo models for classics builders.

I agree, one of the most flowing body lines made, near perfect in my opinion.

You'll do a good job as always Al.

Ps .. had to order KFC as Andy got the last box.

Beautiful car, Skid.
I could overlook those molding flaws,
Wonder if I could resist chopping one.

Yes, I believe Linberg is still in operation, albeit under the Revell banner IIRC. However, I think if you want this kit, you'd have to buy it secondhand.

Sorry both, it's a group build elsewhere and must be built stock, so no chopping or rodding for this one.

The body shortcomings weren't as difficult to clean up as I first feared. Just took some sanding, patience and a couple of hours time. There is still a tiny nick over the left wheel arch to clean and I'm a bit windy about trying to clean up the chrome beltline any more, for fear of going too far!!!

A few hours of work and it's ready for paint:

1935 Mercedes-Benz 500K 00328

1935 Mercedes-Benz 500K 00420

However, some of the brightwork at leat is going to need stripping. NO..... that isan't a reflection.

Looking great as usual Al. Too bad about the grill shell.

Lindberg is now owned by Round 2 Models, not Revell. If the molds to the Johan classics still exit it sure would be great if someone made them again. The kits before those weren't as good as AMT (the Desoto Adventurer for example) but those classics were the best at the time.

She's back in color now:

1935 Mercedes-Benz 500K 00615

1935 Mercedes-Benz 500K 00715

1935 Mercedes-Benz 500K 00816

1935 Mercedes-Benz 500K 00917

Incidently, I forgot to mention that the kit is meant to represent a 1 of 1 vehicle, given by Mercedes Benz to their Grand Prix driver at the time, Rudolph Caracciola. I was so tempted to do it in black but the 1:1 was red as in the boxart.

Been looking on the web and it seems red is the wrong colour. Should be more like Maroon. Going to have to change it!!! 1935 Mercedes-Benz 500K 1757741307

Glad you're changing it to maroon. Really didn't like the red. Seemed all wrong.

Most of the built models of this kit seem to be red but after much research, I finally found out that the original colour of this car was Burgundy.

I don't have any burgundy but I'm going to have a bash at custom mixing it.

Thats a shame cos the paint jobs cracking, can you just over spray with the suitable colour? .. or will it cover any detailing?

Red does look good Mike but it's not correct for this 1 of 1 car.

This is the car after it's 1968 restoration but in it's original colour:

1935 Mercedes-Benz 500K 4351211

The car was later shown at a Concourse d'Elagance event (Pebble Beach?) but failed to start. It has never since appeared in public and is stored in an old tin building on flat tyres and covered in grime:

http://jalopnik.com/5878193/rudi-caracciolas-1-of-1-1935-mercedes-benz-500k-discovered-at-la-salvage-yard

This is my best attempt at 'Burgundy'. What do you guys think?

Maybe a light coat or 2 of darker red would work?  Stripping down to base is such an effort and can bring new agonies where joints and filler are used. Sorry to read of the color prob.

difference in my monitor settings aside, and using the blue of the kitchen towel as a sort of default std ..... it looks like a nice deepish burgundy.

I ran the average density of both the spoon and car colour through the histogram in my graphics software .... so if you want to be "as close as" you could add 5% burnt umber and 2% navy blue (the colour umber and the blue are representative of the RGB and CMYK results so are about ..."ish")
