Al, are you going to invert the #9 and make it a true Mark Donahue car? The #9 car was the other team car driven by Ronnie Bucknum, although at the Bridgehampton race, Donahue blew his engine in practice and took over the #9.

Cool model.

I hadn't thought that far ahead Mike but looking at the decals, it's perfectly possible!

I still prefer the red-white-blue Javelins he drove, for looks and unusual AMC entry. Great cars back then and fun racing. Thanx, good luck!

I am in on this. I will be building this kit:

This was the 1st kit I ever built @ the age of 6, with Dad's assistance. I looked long & hard to find another 1 , to build in honor of my Dad. I found tis kit on EBAY & paid $ 10.00. The original cost my Dad .89cents....

OK... time to get cracking.

The parts:

After exhaustive test fitting (LOL) I noticed the front air dam was too deep and almost touched the ground:

Twenty minutes of careful sanding fixed it though:

Here we go then.  This is what I'll be building.  I don't know if I'll do the rally version as the decal sheet is very dry and brittle.

Not many pieces, but it should be a fun weekend.

Never seen that kit before Ken. Multi piece bodies, don't you just love them!!! LOL

Didn't realise that kit came with rally decals Mike. Go for it, you have nothing to loose and it would look good in a rally livery!!

I got the base paint and gloss coats laid. Colour is correct Zero Paints Sunoco Blue:

Wow!!! I'm wondering if anyone else has even started yet!!! LOL

Interior is extremely basic, not even a decal for the dash:.....

...... and a square hole in the seat. Presumably a relic of the kits slot car heritage. It would be where the driver located methinks!!

Just the bumpers and rear lights to add, then the BMF and decals.

I forgot about the Super Bowl party I promised to help out with and attend, with that much time taken away I simply wouldn't be able to finish anything. I rather not start something I know is impossible to finish so much to my chagrin I have to back out. Next one hopefully.

Al you're making great progress. The blue looks spot on and so is the rest of it. I will poke my head in to follow everyone's progress.

In such a short time period, it's tough getting pics taken, processed and posted.  So here's a couple of steps along the way.

Here was the primer stage - not much flash or imperfection.

Here's the black stage - big zit on rear door in the second pic.

Got the wheel halves together.  By the size of it the steel wheels will probably be hand painted.

Underside painted semi-gloss black. Simple details.

Here's the B&W stage - zits were sanded down.

A little overspray on this side to clean up.

BTW - Al, the decals seem to be Heller's interpretation of a rally car. Sponsors of this 1939 car include Heller Plastics and Air Afrique - not really period from what I've seen. But I might try.

Time to get back to work.

Finished in time and still able to watch the Superball.  The only problem encountered was when the chassis assembly was placed into its slots in the body it made one wheel sit a little off the ground.

All in all it was a good kit to build and a fun weekend to build it.  We'll have to do this again sometime.

Great weekend builds guys.

We certainly will Mike. Weekend builds are fun 'cos they don't have to be perfect!! We'll do another later in the year?

Mike.... get the rally decals on it, then the wheel in the air won't matter. That's normal for a rally car!!! LOL

Grand idea, gives builders a goal short enuf to prevent excess work and still make nice models. Open top Vette was a real challenge with interior needing extra time and effort. Thanx to all for a fun one to watch.
