Post by Skid Tue 30 Dec 2014, 1:14 am

Johnj and I have been planning on this one for months now. Our agreed date is Jan 1st but I thought I'd start the thread early

Mine will be a cargo truck with some 'cargo' in the bed and if I can pull it off, faded winter camo. I'll leave it to John to tell you about his.

See you Jan 1st!!

My build is still kind of a mix in my mind.  My intention is to do a kit bash of these two kits.

I'm not sure of how things will fit yet so will post more info as the build goes along.  Let the games begin Al.

New year (almost) new kit, new cutting mat!!! Gaz Truck Double Build 1792231099 and a bench that is way too tidy!!!

Gaz Truck Double Build Dscn1533

Total of 462 parts in a model that will be just 152mm long. (Just over six inches).

It's a Russian GAZ but in reality was a twin axle Ford Model AAA built in Russia under license.

Sprue shots:

Six of these!!!!...........

........ and a few for sense of scale:

Gaz Truck Double Build Dscn1537

Gaz Truck Double Build Dscn1538

Gaz Truck Double Build Dscn1540

I made mention of doing it in a faded winter camo scheme in the first post. Here is the look I am after:

Gaz Truck Double Build Img04410

I'm familiar with the hair spray and salt methods of 'chipping' paint but don't have much idea yet about fading paint. So if anyone of you guys has some ideas, I'm listening!!!

I have to say Miniart have done a superb job on the molding in this kit. Right up there with Tamia IMO.............. BUT........... their attatchment points are way to thick and to many. FOUR on the fan blade. One for each blade and thick too. Even carefull cutting with sprue cutters broke one blade away!!!  Gaz Truck Double Build 1757741307

Anyway, the engine in this kit (and remember it's 1:35th scale) has twenty parts. All beautifully molded. It's a little gem that puts an awful lot of 1:24 and 1:25 engines to shame.

I decided that I would wire it, so I made up five HT leads for the magneto and a lead for the dynamo. For these I used .19mm wire. Tested my patience and dexterity tonight but I suspect that's as nothing when I try to get the plug leads attached to the tops of the plugs!!! Gaz Truck Double Build 1578238153

Pretty darn cool! I luv the detail and appreciate the many engine parts alone. I hate the "molded-in" starter motors, oil filters, etc so many lazy companies use! Thanx on this N.Y.E.!

WHOA---STOP---CANCEL---DISCONTINUE---FORGET IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is not going to work.  The AAA is just too light for the Katyusha launcher.  It's just as well though.  I have found a GAZ-AAA that I would rather do anyway.

I have ordered the kit and it should be here in approximately two weeks. Al and I agreed on an open end for this build so I will just be a bit behind him. To my benefit I can have plenty of time to steal ideas from him. Gaz Truck Double Build 396455068 Gaz Truck Double Build 396455068

Wow! I'm really impressed by the sprue shots and the motor pics. I've grown to appreciate the smaller scale (1/32 or 1/35) for quality and unique subject matter. I'll be following this thread closely.

For the faded finish, you might try getting dark and light grays down with paint and washes, then use the Tamiya weathering cake (snow) to buff on the faded white look with a cloth.

I like the simplicity of these vehicles.

I did a BA-1 "Izhorskiy" (like Pauls BA-10, an armoured car on a AAA chassis i believe) a while back and really enjoyed the build.

My GAZ arrived from MiniArt in the Ukraine yesterday.  I am very, very pleased with the professionalism and customer service MiniArt offers.  I ordered the kit less than three weeks ago and now have it.  MiniArt communicated with me three times keeping me advised of the status of my order.  You just can't ask for any better than that.  I am even more impressed given the problems that the Ukraine is having with the Russian Federation.  Just wanted everybody to know that MiniArt is a company that can be depended on.

Here is the kit.

Gaz Truck Double Build 00123

The obligatory spru shot.  There is a total of 659 parts in the kit.

Gaz Truck Double Build 00511

I believe this is the version I will build.

Gaz Truck Double Build 00317

My intention is to build a small diorama and will include these two GAZ trucks that are already built.

Gaz Truck Double Build 00124

Gaz Truck Double Build 00125

Got to be honest, I will not make any attempt to wire this engine like may very, very anal friend did with his.  It's just too small Al!!!!!!!  Hopefully I will get started on the kit tomorrow and will have something to post in the next couple of days.

I swallowed a bottle of brave pills tonight and attatched the plug 'leads' with trembling hands!!! Gaz Truck Double Build 1792231099

When they were done, they looked far too uniform and although the real deal 'leads' were copper strips (and uniform) they just didn't look right, so I beat them up a bit.

I also attached a lead to the starter motor which I had forgotten about.

600 and more parts, brave for sure! Luv the look of the truck, thanx for expanding the site beyond the usual vehicles we luv. Interesting, and to those of us who have done 1/25, anything smaller is an even greater challenge!

Post by Guest Thu 22 Jan 2015, 5:22 pm

Got started on the kit this morning early.  After reviewing the instruction booklet (yes, a booklet) I noticed that the tires and wheels were multiple pieces.  I had never seen this type of construction so I decided to assemble the tires and wheels first just to see how they came out.

The kit contains six spru for the tires and wheels.

Gaz Truck Double Build 00215

Each tire assembles from seven separate discs and the wheel.

Gaz Truck Double Build 00318

The discs are glued together and then the wheel is installed at the center.

Gaz Truck Double Build 00413

You end up with a tire and wheel that looks like this.

Gaz Truck Double Build 00613

There is a great deal of work just in assembling the tires, but the tread pattern is the most realistic I have seen.  Seeing as the assembly must be repeated a total of ten times it's going to be a long day guys. Gaz Truck Double Build 3887228019
