SE5 British WWI Fighter
Recentley started another 1/72 aircraft. Got this Roden SE5 from ebay where you can occasionally find Roden kits for around $5. It comes with decals for the planes flown by Edward Mannock or Billie Bishop - both Aces. Apart from a warp in one side of the fuselage, it looks quite nice.
To take care of the warp, I inserted a piece where it curved inward to maintain the width. When I put the radiator section on, I'll clamp the front to the correct width.
Looks like a bit of putty is needed here.
Didn't bother putting the foot controls or stick in this one since I plan to have a pilot in it. They provided a spare ammo case for the Lewis MG and indicated it went in the cockpit.
More will come.
Thanks for looking.

Re: SE5 British WWI Fighter
You seem to pick aircraft with warped fuselages Mike...... LOL. Fix looks like it should work but man the fit of the cockpit top is terrible.
I know you'll work your magic on it though!!

I'm always amazed that now we're older and more skilled, we can make these simple little kits look so good! Thanx for building another one,

Got the radiator attached and fuselage looks straight, now. Paul, don't let that little thing dissuade you from Roden models. They are quite good for the price you can get them for. Carefully added a little putty in the small gaps and sanded down. Used MM Medium Green enamel for the body and MM Tan for the underside.
Thanks again for looking and comments,
Mike

Re: SE5 British WWI Fighter
Nice fix Mike. The fuselage looks straight now and no gaps on the cowl.
Are you going to rig it? If so, be sure to let us know of any improved methods you discover!!

Re: SE5 British WWI Fighter
Thanks. Yes, I'll be rigging this one also - seems like I've gone rigging crazy lately. I had a glue bomb of HMS Bounty that was sitting on the end of my bench for years. Every now and then I'd do some work on it to kill time. I decided to rig that with a cable-like jewelry wire that ended up being too thick for 1/72 planes.
I recently received some charcoal colored EZLine and I think I'll use that. I just hope it doesn't disappear in the dark color of the plane. I also thought of drilling small holes to place the line so the CA dabs aren't as noticeable.

Re: SE5 British WWI Fighter
This was going along so well - and then....
I used a rattle can clear prior to applying decals and it reacted with the MM enamel colors. I've used this clearcote over their gloss paints as well as Testors paints before with no reaction.
So, I'm going to let this one dry out and see if I can sand down the ripples and salvage it. Don't look for an update soon.

Re: SE5 British WWI Fighter
Time to get back to this stalled project.
I sanded the ripples down a bit and laid some acrylic clear over everything. Gave it a while to harden and it looked pretty good. Applied decals for 'Mick' Mannock's plane. Added the exhausts and some other small bits. When it came to the pilot figure, the shelf in the cockpit prevented him from getting down into the seat, so I had to amputate Mick's legs below the knees (they weren't visible anyway). The face looks a but nasty in the closeup.
Sprayed the fuselage and lower wing with dullcote.
New Year's coming - time to review stalled projects.

Re: SE5 British WWI Fighter
It's been quite awhile since I posted on this thread, but it's still alive. I tried setting the struts in with the top brackets angled parallel to the ground, but it ended up with the top wing too far forward. I set them with CA, but luckily, they broke clean without damaging paint.
Since then, I've gotten the struts installed correctly, added some rigging and the upper machine gun, and landing gear.
A little more rigging to go, yet.
Sorry for not keeping up with all the pics.
